(as for the vat of jello, i can assure you that both patricia and i are far too refined to put a video of that sort online. and we can probably work out any hypothetical differences without the aid of gelatinous desserts. sorry to disappoint you. we'll let you know if we ever decide to take it up as sport.)

Besides, all that gelatin would gum up the buttons of the ebook readers. Anything about Rowling is book news, and in particular, given her known antipathy towards ebooks, a new book by Rowling is ebook news because it won't be an ebook. Officially. (Though I'm considering starting a betting pool on how many days in advance of the paper release the fully scanned, OCR'd, and proofed version will be available via darknet.) |

I only found out about it yesterday. It hadn't been announced here. And I thought there would be at least some people here who would be interested.

Sure - that's a fair comment. I must admit that I considered reporting it when the initial announcement was made (which I see was on 31st July) but I thought at the time that it wasn't really sufficiently "mobile reading" related. I have both a "standard" and a "deluxe" version on pre-order . |

actually i find the harry potter books to be far from dumbed down. the concepts, characters and situations are a darned site smarter and more adult than many books i've read that were written for adults. and as fantasy goes, i think it's excellent and dark. in fact, the last book or two are too dark for me. for me to really get the most out of any book or movie, it needs to take an occasional a break from dark or i become a bit desensitized. Yes, that can make an experience difference. I once printed out all of Le Morte d'Arthur using a large calligraphy font on fake parchment paper for a friend in the hospital. That was 10 years ago and I believe they still have it and use it to read with their kids. (Though they did make a binder for it.)

(And this has nothing to do with the fact that I'd personally much rather read the Tales of Beetle the Bailey...) (Well, okay... actually it does. I just wanted an excuse to use that Beetle the Bailey pun and throw in a stupid Survivor title...)

I admit, when Amazon started pushing it, I thought of posting here but couldn't get motivated to do so... at least in part because I was having trouble figuring out what angle on the story would make it ebook newsworthy. But we did have a post when Amazon bought the book at the charity auction, so it's kind of late to say it's off-topic. Possibly the thread could be moved to the Lounge, I guess. |
