Samsung's electrowetting display in 2013?
From the Verge-
http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/22/28...ay-ewd-release Original report from Tweakers (Dutch)- http://tweakers.net/nieuws/80817/sam...-tot-2013.html Looks neat. But is it affordable? |

I wonder about the saturation and contrast also. Do they have any recent vids of the screens?
If it costs anything like Mirasol does, I don't think it's commercially viable. |

Mirasol is here, on 3 devices, unfortunately 5.7" screens only until now. There is no reason why such new technologies should be more expensive then LCDs, once they are produced in volume.

That display looks like it would be cool. I'd like to see a video of it in action.

It is the old theme that they have in high end yacht and car dealerships.
If you got to ask the price, you can't afford it. |

It always seems to take longer than we want. Eink took forever and we were beginning to think it wouldn't pan out. I don't know who will be the net big competitor, but we still have mirasol, electrowetting, pidelqi, and at least one other (is it from Bridgestone?).
In terms of improved battery life, if not other characteristics (such as backlight/eye strain) OLED was one of these alternatives that has come to market. I am sure there will be alternatives. Who knows which will be best. Eink still looks pretty strong if your purpose is reading text. |

Liquavista have been a bit quiet in 2012. The only think I could find was a recent interview (in Dutch) that's only available on-line as scanned pages of a newspaper in a PDF:
http://www.liquavista.com/news_and_e...x?ReleaseID=66 However, a bit of OCR and google translate later, and I have the jist of the article. It mainly looks at the history of the technology, being an interview with the chap who invented it, and is still in charge. It seems that they are aiming initially at ebook readers, and expect to come to market some time in the next two years. So it seems we're going to be looking at 2014 rather than 2013. |

And will this screen offer colour from the start?

The article mentions "it supposedly offers a bright, colourful, and flexible display that can be read indoors and out". But there was no color in the screen. Not a real picture?

Yes, I thought it a bit puzzling, the words not matching the picture; plainly the screen shown could benefit from colour, as it includes a bar chart graphic. The fact it is only grey-scale strongly suggests there is no colour (yet).

Mirasol came and went.
Image quality turned out to be nothing to write-home about and yield problems led to low volume/high-pricing. The emergence of cheap android tablets with tolerable battery life appears to have foreclosed the market for the current version of Mirasol. There might be future versions but nobody is holding their breath. |

The technology can certainly do colour and video, but whether the colour will be in the first product I don't know. They do have one technology that stacks CMY cells on top of each other, so every pixel can be any colour, rather than using RGB sub-cells. There's some footage of actual displays from three years ago here. Here's an article about a full colour ebook liquavista display shown at CES2010 An an outdoor demo in mid 2010 This article seems to have a good roundup of all the available footage. But Liquavista have not been out demoing very much. I'm hoping that this is because Samsung are keeping them under wraps, and that we'll see something really impressive when they go to mass production. |
