No, this doesn't help. There's nothing to be done to prevent that your books will be deleted from your device via the internet! (Don't believe everything you read. Start with me! You will find plenty of discussion about this topic in the "E-book General" section. To use Calibre for securing and catalogising your books is nevertheless a very good idea. And welcome to Mobileread! ) |

The OPs device is a computer. If (s)he moves the books into calibre they will not be deleted by Kindle 4 PC. However since they will still be infested with DRM they won't be readable either. If on the other hand (s)he removed the drm and put the books in calibre there is no way they would be vulnerable to external removal and the books could be read in various applications or devices. Details of DRM removal aren't something we can discuss on this forum, but over on Apprentice Alf's blog the details and help are easy to find. Last edited by DoctorOhh; 11-06-2012 at 04:42 AM. Amazon made a mistake many years ago and has not repeated that mistake. The indie book dealers had to remove access to books from the major Publishing houses when agency pricing came into play. They could not pull the books from devices but they removed them from peoples accounts. The reality is that your ebooks are not "safe" unless you store them on your computer and remove the DRM. It is far too easy for any company to remove access to your ebooks if you store them with the company. The likelihood of Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Sony, and Kobo going under and your losing access is pretty slim. The likelihood that any of the above bookstores pull books from your device is pretty slim. The best thing you can do is keep copies on your computer and be prepared to remove DRM if something weird should happen. |

Others have explained pretty thoroughly, but keep in mind that there could always be a major, major crash of servers and backups causing loss of individual titles. Not likely, but possible. Best to remove the DRM and store on your computer and/or backups. Remember also that formats change, so by removing the DRM now, your ebook remains convertible to future devices (kindle 8 for instance).

Heck, you can even store the books with DRM if you feel uncomfortable removing the DRM. Then is something does happen you have a choice to remove the DRM or lose your books

Removing DRM would help if it was technically possible (not all DRM has been hacked), but is also a crime in some countries unless you are registered blind. | |

Download all the books you buy using your PC. Transfer them to your Kindle (or whatever) via USB. Keep wifi switched off on the Kindle. Make lots of backups on physical media (ie DVD rather than memory stick). Buy paper copies.

Amazon did not remove ebooks from that person's Kindle. Apparently the Kindle had been broken at some point prior to the account being locked out.

Did you miss the next bit where it was suggested that the OP not believe everything that he or she reads, including the response that you are taking exception to. It was humorous - tongue in cheek. "(Don't believe everything you read. Start with me! You will find plenty of discussion about this topic in the "E-book General" section. To use Calibre for securing and catalogising your books is nevertheless a very good idea. And welcome to Mobileread! )" I suggest that you read all of a response before deciding that it is "short sighted". |
