A quick question as to perspective - why did you place the trees so far to the right? A conscious decision? Or it just felt right?

I think you mean composition over perspective. I'd say it's roughly approximating the old divide the plane into thirds. It's a method of adding a bit more dynamic interest to what could be a rather static image.

Same goes for photography (which is where this originated) but the reference was not quite this composition.

Yeah -- having the empty space on the left evokes winter, not just "trees".

Great job Kenny! I'd had just seen the picture in the SPOILER below and wanted to share it, and then I happened upon Kenny's thread. So, I hope he doesn't mind me adding this picture to the thread (however, I am putting it in a spoiler because I don't want to detract from Kenny's thread). Spoiler:
...in case you are wondering, this was done entirely in pencil and is not a photograph. |

Thank you! I have mixed feelings about extreme realism even though it is realism that I strive for in most of my work (this particularly one is actually less realistic and more artistic). I can appreciate the work and effort involved in such works, but even doing work in the area of realism sometime I say "why not just take (or print) a picture." Armin addresses this in his view in his latest posting on his DA website. Here is Armin's most recent work “The Simplicity of Silence” Pencil on Board, 45” x 80” which ended up taking some 1800 hours to complete: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/20...ra-d5dnjld.jpg BTW Armin was one of those that did and continue to inspire me in my art. DA Link here: http://nimra.deviantart.com/art/The-...ence-325264369 his other works are well worthy of visiting! - http://nimra.deviantart.com/ As are DiegoKoi's works also at DA: http://diegokoi.deviantart.com/ Last edited by kennyc; 10-24-2012 at 03:15 PM. |

Spoiler:
I also like illustrators like Norman Rockwell, Arthur Rackham, and Howard Pyle because they are masters of artwork that evokes emotion.
