I wonder if this only applies to online orders? Perhaps they have to wait for the servers to update the transactions overnight similar to the way banks don't show some transactions until the next day. I've never tried to return an item the same day I purchased it in person at a BB, so they might allow that at my BB too.

My Best Buy has the same policy. I also bought something, realized when I got home that it just wasn't going to work, and had to wait until the following day to return it. It was purchased online for an in-store pickup.

Not sure it's that simple. I was surprised how even the Nook was, but right below the bright glow from the LEDs was a dim patch before it evened out. With the Kindle, the darker patches correspond with where the LEDs are, not where they aren't. Some of the images of the Kindle screen show what I would describe as "ripples" as well, which is a pretty bizarre effect.

If I had to guess, there are some interference effects in play. These are a lot harder to figure out. One thing that I might try is LEDs on two opposite edges in the hope that it might even stuff out. But if there are interference effects, it might make things worse.

Edge-lit TVs have similar uniformity drawbacks to these edge-lit e-Ink displays because they use similar tech in the backlight. The upside is that the work on one can help the other to improve the light guides (Amazon, B&N and Kobo were all probably waiting on some of that work).

Sorry mine went back earlier today. I can say looking at other pics that mine was more of an extreme case. I had large shadows in the bottom middle of the screen with a few white hot spots as well. The shadow extended into about three of four lines of text.

I opted for a refund rather than a replacement because I read both the Kindle and the Nook Glow in the dark side by side for awhile and came to the conclusion that the Kindle was not a significant improvement over the Nook.

If I didn't already have a Nook and were deciding between the two ( assuming the Kindle had a good screen) I would probably pick the Kindle. Having a Nook and having read the early rave reviews I thought the Kindle would be a significant improvement over the Nook. For me I found very little difference between reading a Nook in the dark or the Paperwhite and for me anyway, not enough for me to justify the expense.

I went to a BB yesterday where the web site said they were in stock, and the person there insisted they weren't for sale yet. I pointed out that other BB stores were selling them, and the web site said they were in stock, but he wouldn't budge. It was extremely frustrating.

Another store will happily sell you one though. I had to do the same thing. I gave up on the store that refused to sell me one and had another store hold one for me instead to pick up.

They are at BB now, even in their circular for the weekend. The problem is that they have their staff so afraid of breaking street dates, stores are refusing to sell them because they can't figure out what date they are allowed to sell them on.

Well then if it's in the ad it should be for sale now. Just BS if it isn't. It's a little like when my Kindle black was in the Staples ad. I had to show them the ad and then they went to the scary back room to get one.

Mine has the black ones hidden in the back, so they can try to sell last year's silver model for the same price, as do other stores that I have heard of on MR.
I feel bad for customers who do not know better and only see the $10 off sign.

I went in to BB yesterday morning and picked one up after seeing stock online. They only had one or two and now everywhere shows no stock.

I love it. No problems in the dark at any level of the light.

Yes.. BB is in disarray Nation wide.. the whole chain has major problems with management, employee training, coordination, inventory notifications, staffing good sales associates.. etc.. they are projected to close 25-30% of 1,400 stores in 2013.. they have the problem ..

Store A calls Store B to ask a question or check on stock before I drive 45 minutes to get there .... and no one answers the phone. The left hand is actively ignoring the right hand.
