My experience: Read this thread here yesterday, went up to my local Best Buy. Nothing on display, asked an employee if they had any yet. He said not till next week, sounded pretty confident in it, so I didn't press it. This morning it was still listed as available on the website, so I went back up there. Found a different guy, he climbed up to one of the high storage shelves and grabbed one. Looked like there were about 5 up there, which seems consistent to what other posters have said. He said he had to check the computer to see if he could sell it to me. He typed it in, and said their street date was 10/19, so everything was good. I went through the setup, added a book and it's charging now. Screen looks good to me, so I'm happy. Coming from an OG nook, so it's definitely an upgrade for me. |

Do the retail Kindles not come charged like the ones from Amazon? I've noticed several mention charging their Kindle right out of the box. A forgien concept for someone who buys from Amazon and the Kindle comes with over half a battery.

I would assume they come the same, with the battery half charged. Maybe those that are charging them want to start with a full battery?

Must resist need for latest hardware. Mine is going on a year and a half and I swore to myself that I would not upgrade until four year mark. This is getting hard since the paperwhite would help a lot when I am standing at the buss stop in the morning and its dark outside.

They had the Paperwhite in my local BB circular, but none on display. I'm interested, but the lack of page turn buttons is a major shortcoming.

I find the first charge from Amazon always lasts longer then a full charge that I do myself unless I'm doing a ton of indexing. You're suppose to drain the battery first then charge for the first few times to get it to sync correctly with the battery gauge.

Long story short, you probably will not be able to test out the new PW in the parking lot and return it that day if it is bad. Pity as that would save you another trip to return it. I'm not sure how BB would react to a replacement request as that seems to vary per manufacturer. | |

My Best Buy doesn't have that policy either, thankfully. I once bought an iPod car mount, took it to my car and played around with it, didn't like it, so I returned it on the spot with no issue.
