Apparently, it's very hard for humans to judge relative shades.

That's a very good illusion & I didn't believe they were the same until I tested them.

i know ; it's crazy. i had a hard time believing it too. but photoshop doesn't lie... (well, it does actually, really well, but not in this case).

That is probably correct, even a soft malleable rubber will damage the surface of your paper. Perhaps only bread - used in the olden days to help remove charcoal - will leave the surface of the paper relatively untouched...

I suspect that by using your eraser you are slightly roughening the surface of the paper which is then able to absorb some of the ink more readily than the un-touched paper...

Just to show how relative dark and light is - often it is the surrounding that makes the difference...

Yes. That's why I always scan them, because I often don't get to keep them.

Oh, yes... I scan the model. Visually, certainly, and sometimes with a camera. I even scan them thoroughly before they become "the model".

So then -- do you carry a scanner with you? You mentioned finding models wherever you are. Curious minds want to know how you do this!

Yes, I've seen this done before - you use a scanner as a camera ....
