Nothing. You've been naught but kind. Perhaps its an age thing, but I do love ABBA. Listening to their songs makes me happy and dance around the house. Not a pretty sight, really, since I can't dance, but at least it gets me moving! Can we still be friends even tho our music tastes are 'different'?

ABBA wrote carefully crafted pop songs. Not everyone cares for them, but they were masters at what they did.

They were also a source of divided feelings in their native Sweden. On the one hand, they were international superstars, popular around the world, and selling millions of records. Swedes were proud of them.

On the other hand, they were multimillionaires because of their success. Sweden is a rather ruthlessly egalitarian society, and no Swede is supposed to be significantly better off than another. There was a fair bit of resentment of their wealth, though it isn't clear what they are supposed to have done instead.

It's probably an urban myth, but i once heard that they were int he 105% tax bracket in Sweden.

Snopes is quiet on the subject.

They would certainly be in the highest bracket.

I have a acquaintance in NYC who was born in Ireland, worked in Scandinavia, and emigrated to the US. He explained his move as financial - taxation was best described as predatory in Sweden, and he couldn't make any money.

A Swedish woman I knew a while back described working there. "Once I have passed the probationary period, and I am in the union, you can't touch me!" I asked what the incentive was for anyone to actually work hard and produce, since there was no direct incentive to do so, and no penalty for not doing so, and was told "We work because we are good Swedes, and that's what good Swedes do."

I suppose it works for them.

some torturers are masters of their craft as well. i don't like them either.

to be fair, it's not just abba. disco in general makes my skin crawl. after about 6 nanoseconds i start to feel nauseated and after 8 nanoseconds i usually begin to have a grand mal seizure.

also, history has demonstrated time and again that nothing good can come of any musical endeavor that gets its start by winning a television contest. *especially* eurovision.

You have my sympathies; not many things worse than listening to music you don't like filtered through apartment walls.
For me, it was the psychological torment of never knowing when it would stop; and it being an intrusion of my private space

- it's a pretty miserable experience.

thanks for sympathising ; that's kind of you. it's not actually filtered ; it's transmitted directly via the courtyard. they should give concerts in the courtyard ; it's got some fairly impressive acoustics. you should hear when they let the local shums out to rampage around it. slight reverberation, sure, but the sounds carries something terrible. (and i do mean "something terrible" in this case).

have not actually seen riverdance, so am unequipped to answer, although i tend to be skeptic (...eurovision != something good...).
