Online Convert is a new free service that allows anyone to convert electronic book files from one format to another without downloading a thing:

Just as long as you know that by using this service, you're actually uploading your books to them... it's a trust/privacy issue; do they keep copies of the books you upload, do they detect "pirated" copies (kindle books with removed drm, scans you made yourself, etc.) and sell your IP to the rightholders, etc. etc.

The converter is using Calibre. I just gave it a test and converted something to ePub.

What this means is no longer do I need to download Calibre I can use it online.

I will still be using calibre, just because it gives you access to all the advanced options.

I prefer to not rely on a website to do my personal e-book conversion. I am picky on the advanced settings. I <3 calibre.

I have been using

since last November.

It is useful when you are using a machine that cannot (or doesn't allow) extra software to be installed.

It too uses Calibre

It has a "click to delete" feature.

It would seem all these "services" are helping themselves to Calibre, and giving a service you have no need of, if you simply use Calibre yourself, keep your information in your hands - and perhaps make a small donation to help the excellent work done in continually updating the original ?

I somehow doubt these sites make a donation for using it .....

But I'm happy to be proved wrong .....

Not everyone can or wants to run Calibre on their PC.

There are numerous online services in addition to online-convert.com

These are all good for increasing awareness and acceptance of ebooks and enable many readers to convert files to formats they prefer.

But you cannot tweak the options or be sure it's updated. So you may end up with a conversion that is not optimal.

I don't think these services are designed for people who want "optimal" conversions. (I believe that is only a tiny segment of people who use ereaders.)

I believe they're designed for people who want a quick and dirty, easy, no hassle conversion...and these services serve that market segment well. I think there are a LOT of people who just want to be able to convert an epub to use on their kindle, etc. and be done with it.
