B&N cut prices

It was a matter of time. B&N drop prices on several of their tablets. Probably in response to Google Nexus 7 new tablet and price.

This end of the year is going to be interesting in terms of prices and tablets.

The Glow isn't included in the price reductions. Wonder how much that will be reduced when the new Kindles arrive.

Good point.

I think that at the end of the day, we all, Nook or Kindle fans will get the benefit.

More competition, better prices or even the push of bringing innovation to future products.

The 16GB Nook Tab is now $199 and has the same CPU, GPU, RAM, and card slot as the $249 8GB Galaxy Tab 2. A viable option for those who don't need the cams, GPS, IR, etc.

Unfortunately, as is often the case with US based businesses, they don't ship internationally. Lucky for Samsung I suppose.

I wonder what B&N's margins are with these. Are they still running a profit? Were they running a profit in the first place?

I hope this year there's also a round of e-ink reader price reductions.

There just doesn't seem to be much point to a dedicated reading tablet, now that the Nexus 7 is out.

I was looking at that, myself. It's something my lady-wife would rather enjoy. She's been looking more and more at getting something.

Root that bad boy and there she goes... Tempting, to say the least.

And those who really want either there are easy ways to get them. For Amazon items I actually prefer to use a transshipping company, even when Amazon offers to ship directly. The transshippers' international shipping charges are lower and Amazon now has started to collect "import tax+VAT+custom service fees" in advance. (Due to the low value of the shipments there local customs never collects import tax and VAT, anyway).

That one always surprised me. Why would they concede "the rest of the world" to Amazon without even trying. Are they the Cubs of eBook retailing?

Because Amazon is (reportedly) happy with FIRE's sales numbers and they already have a replacement on the way, presumably at the same price point. So cutting the price now, only to raise it when the new model comes out, is bad marketting.

Or, if the new model is going to sell at a lower price, it is better to say; "new and improved. And cheaper, too."

They did when they made the 8GB version of the Tablet. They lowered the specs and price to match those of the Fire.

Like Amazon and Samsung, B&N's tablets have inferior specs compared to the Nexus. Asking the same price as a Nexus won't sell many tablets. Price cuts and or added accessories are a must in order to stay competitive until they release their next gen devices.

To techies, sure. But B&N has the advantage of selling Nooks in their store. The Nook Color and Nook Tablet are a bit of a different product than the generic Android tablets, software-wise. They are selling e-readers with some tablet stuff added, not straight-up tablets.

Certainly if I was a reader and not a techie, I'd go with a Nook first over a generic tablet - it's a much better e-reader than a generic tablet, software wise. And there's a lot better case selection for the Nook than the Tab 2 or the Nexus.
