And perhaps most famously of all, Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy.

Also relevant to the topic at hand was this podcast I was listening to the other day from SFF Audio: http://www.sffaudio.com/?cat=52

For books, there's usually one ending, but Mira Grant for example released the alternate ending to her novel Feed on a site.
But you should have seen all the pirated DVDs when the Highlander: End Game came out. Each one had a different ending, and it was fun reading about all the variants. |

To be specific, Asimov originally wrote four short stories for magazines. These four stories, together with a prequel, were then published as "Foundation". There were then four more magazine stories published, which were issued in pairs as "Foundation and Empire" and "Second Foundation" respectively.

If you notice, the trilogy has "eight chapters" spread across the first three books. These chapters are the stories themselves, each story focusing on a specific era/conflict.
For me, it was immediately evident even without knowing it was originally a fixup novel. Last edited by charlesatan; 07-11-2012 at 01:30 AM. |

Not surprising, given the way it came together. One other major fix-up novel that was a massive hit is "Gone with the Wind". Most people think it's one gigantic novel when it's actually an anthology of short stories that tell a series of related tales about the south during the civil war grouped together under a common timeline.
