How is the K Touch?

Somehow, I'm not sure how, Amazon gave me an $85 credit towards any Kindle content or device. I'm thinking about buying a K Touch to replace my current Keyboard. I love my keyboard and am not sure if I'll like the touch. Does your screen get smudgy? Do you find the touch part distracting? Do you frequently interact with the device accidentally? I'm not interested in the fourth gen regular Kindle because the battery life is shorter than the K3. Anyway, what do you think?

The K5 (Touch) has a matte finish on the screen, so you do not see reflections, and you do not see fingerprints (even when you have greasy fingers). EDIT: Okay, if you intentionally hold it so you see refected light (which I automatically avoid) then you CAN see a very blurry reflection of the light source AND greasy fingerprints. I hold mine such that I do not see any reflections so I do not see fingerprints, but outside in the sunlight it may be more of a problem, as Pomtroll said in the next post.

Because it uses Infrared light in the bezel above the screen to sense your finger touches, it can see a touch when your finger "almost" touches. You need to be careful when touching it that none of your other fingers are not "almost touching", or it will figure that you touched it at the midpoint between the two fingers.

Once you know that, it is easy to avoid it by keeping your other fingers up out of the way.

To turn a page, you can just roll your thumb slightly over the bezel edge toward the screen while holding it. It is easy to get used to that while reading so that it does not distract from the experience.

Yes the screen can get smudged if your fingers have grease or something sticky on them. And of course all fingers have some oil so over time the screen will get a bit smudged. I just wipe mine down periodically. But for the most part I don't notice the smudges while reading.

All reading involves some hand & or finger movement whether turning a paper page, clicking on a button or tapping a screen. You get used to whichever you are doing.

And no I don't frequently interact with the my reader accidentally.

I think you'll like your Kindle Touch once you get used to the differences. Just remember it took a bit of getting used to buttons when you went to your first reader from paper.

I have a K3 and recently got a touch because I mislaid the K3. I have to say that I don't much like it. I expect I would like it if I could master the touching. About 80% of the time I do it right, but frustratingly often I manage to do it wrongly in one way or another. Sometimes I touch it and nothing happens. Sometimes something does happen but it's not the right thing. I think it's a bit lighter than the K3, which is a plus.

I own both and use both almost daily. I use the K3 at the gym, as I find the actual buttons easier to use when my fingers are sweaty.

Otherwise, I prefer the Touch. No buttons mean no noise when turning pages, which is nice at night, and I really like just touching a word to bring up the definition, I use that a lot, and it's so much quicker than using the toggle button. The lighted case for the Touch is much nicer than the lighted case for the K3 as well.

I've had a Touch since last November, and I love it. I've owned numerous readers, and the Touch is the best I've used. The interface works well, and the screen fors not dhow fingerprints.

Does the Kindle Touch read mobi files, or azw3 files, or both?

Flowing text around images and true (indented both sides) blockquotes can't be done in mobi; has anyone read an ebook on a Kindle Touch which can do these things?

Yes, the Touch supports KF8.

Nice screen, does not become greasy as LCD tablets (never bothered me).

What I agree with DMB is that very frequently I do something without response; sometimes I do something and, until the device responds, I do it again thinking it failed, and two pages jump. About this, I really really prefered my Keyboard.

I had a keyboard model, but sold it. I just did not like the keyboard. I have a touch now and really like it. I also like the weight and the fact it feels sturdy. Must better then the Sony T1

My biggest nark with my KT is that it will sometimes get a stray hair on the screen (I have a veritable petting zoo in my home so this is not uncommon) and to remove it I have to blow on the screen or put the screen saver on and give it a good wipe. I use my Touch a LOT and haven't ever noticed smudges or marks on it, because when you're reading you just tap the lower right of the screen and the page changes. There isn't a lot of high contact like you'd get with a smartphone or tablet.

Plus, the screen has some sort of fancy anti-glare finish that doesn't seem to hold dirt or marks, and that helps a lot.

The Touch parts aren't distracting - though if you're used to a hidden button on the side to turn pages it will take a moment of adjustment. I find it very easy to rest the kindle on the palm of one hand and either use my thumb or a finger from my other hand to tap one side, even if I'm reading while lying on my side. Your hand is rarely in the way of what you're reading so you don't notice it.

I don't interact with the device accidentally...but I bet when you first got your KK you'd grab it by the keyboard part and mash buttons without meaning to. You learn. Plus, there isn't a lot you can do accidentally with the Touch screen. Maybe you'll skip a page further than you intended but it goes back quickly enough.

The battery life is excellent. I use mine every day for more than an hour and sometimes as much as 6 or 7 hours if it's a really good book, and I haven't had to charge it since it came out of the box. I've had it for about 6 weeks now, although I leave wifi turned off unless I've bought something.

Overall I would definitely recommend it and I hated the kindle at first - my stepdad got a basic K4 last year in November and I was really put off by how clumsy it is. He's useless so I ended up doing all of the setting up for him, entering wifi keys and loading books for him etc.

Definitely buy the Touch, if your KK is about ready to croak
