Not really. They have no physical indicator to notify you. One of the many things I despise about iProducts.

I think in the past staff were also told not to use any of the translation tools from sites such as Google... so nothing new here.

IBM is only being slightly paranoid. They have a valid concern. Some day, I say in the next decade, we'll have enough processing power for the work to be all done on the handset. Meanwhile Siri's service (and Dragon Dictate and any similar) has to do something to prove the security AND confidentiality of their service.

This is fairly similar to the "don't put anything in the cloud that you wouldn't want anyone else to read" advice. We hear about on-line security breaches and even encryption bypasses almost every day now.

I wonder if they bothered to patent multicolored clamshells.

In a more Siri- related note, has anyone wondered what happens if its listening while you're really angry at it and just happen to threaten to do incredibly violent things to it? Like ripping out its motherboard, nailing it to a tree, and shooting at it with elephant guns? Cause there's times when I'm *that* angry at my computer, and I'd like to be sure that it can't call the cops...

Good thing that old iphone 3G didn't have Siri yet or I would already be locked away for life, so many times I threatened that thing before I finally got rid of it.

Maybe I'm missing something. When you said "So you'd prefer to wait every time, you query if mom's sent the recipe [...]", you didn't mean "you" as in me, but a person who has an iPhone 4S?

What I trying to point out in my previous post is that I don't understand what I would "wait" for. Email notifications would tell me if I have received an email.

Just because you get notified that you (as in generic you) have an email, doesn't mean that you (still generic) will open said emails upon receipt - I and many friends just take the attitude, "I've got an email, catch it later" but if I (also generic) want a specific email from a specific person with a specific content then that is what siri is doing with the example of the specific question relating to the recipe because that would actually be of interest otherwise one can continue to get on with one's life without feeling a need to open every damn email that arrives... and that is the point that I was trying to make...

And everything is intended to be generic because I don't own any iPhone but friends do... personally I prefer my Android smartphone... Oh yes, that doesn't automatically inform me of incoming mail because I don't use the email system, I prefer gmail and that (using Notifier) will inform on any platform that it is available on but I do not have any audible notification turned on, I'm quite capable of checking when I may be interested in whether I've received an email, the rest of the time I could care less as I hate being interrupted...

So far, Siri works for us about 1/4 of the time.

When it works, it's great! But we're likely to get messages that Siri can't help us right now, or she thinks my wife is me, or my wife uses my name "Jan" and a calendar page for January comes up.

In other words, it's about as accurate as voice recognition always has been, IMO.

You don't have to read every email. You can just see that you have an email, and if you wonder if it is from mom about a recipe you just open the app. If there is an email from mom with the title recipe, you have your answer.

Siri is just about as useful for this as the robot arm in The Big Bang Theory for unpacking food.

But mom doesn't title it recipe, that's an afterthought... it's How are you and the kids and I've got ten others as well so siri does the work... I light a cigar outside, flip the phone, ask about the recipe and siri says yea or nay and I'm done... that's the idea behind it... no checking, reading looking at notifications... a one-handed swipe and statement and use or forget depending on answer...

How effective is another question but it's a great idea and better than notifications etc which require interventions/actions apart from the most basic... no need to even open any email app just ask...

Now that's a more relevant point and applies about the same as my Android voice app... although some results can be amusing as well as irritating...
