				Movie Rights to 'Wool'

20th Century Fox has purchased he movie rights to the self published sci fi series Wool. Hooray for the indie author!! Ridley and Tom Scott are part of the effort. http://movies.about.com/b/2012/05/17...-into-wool.htm |

Obtaining the movie rights is a far cry from a movie being made. I agree it would be very cool, but there's just no reason to get excited about a movie project until it gets the green-light. It could languish in option-land forever.

Sadly true. For every hundred movie rights bought, I'd be surprised if more than ten ever reaches the screen.

However, with the huge media coverage that has gone with this one, I suspect it might have moved up the To Be Made list. i do hope so.

Heh. You're an optomist. For every movie made, there's a hundred that have money spent putting them in production. For every movie in production, there's a hundred movies that get scripts written. And for every script written, there's probably a thousand books optioned. In many cases, a studio will option a book because they've got something else in production that's similiar, and they want to make sure the book they option isn't turned in to a movie in time to compete.

That all depends on how much somebody with tons of money likes it at each stage. They'll kick ideas around on how to turn it in to a movie, and if somebody is willing to spend a few tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands, depending on the script writer) on a script, a script will get written. And if somebody likes that enough, they'll spend some more polishing the script, and maybe a little concept art and story boards. And if that looks good enough, feelers will go out for actors, directors, etc. Making a movie a long, long journey, with a lot of steps. If it's optioned today, it will be at least several years, and probably five or more, before it's a movie.

The world awaits...... We must be told !!! What part will Tom Cruise play ???? That's the impressive yet understated 6'5" big guy that is in search of any role befitting his physique, screen charisma, and acting skills, whom you would normally think was perfect casting for the demands of the up-coming Jack Reacher role - perhaps the shooting schedules could be staggered [##] Although I don't know if "Wool" has many parts that require such a big hunk as Mr. Cruise plainly is....... that silo seems awfully crowded. [##] .....along with a lot of Reacher, and Woollie fans ? |

Ona related note I saw on Dear Author that a self-pubbed Romance, On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves, was just optioned by MGM. Again who knows if it will be made or how far it will get but it's neat to see some self-pub authors getting noticed. http://minivannews.com/travelandarts...maldives-37491 |

Even though we may never see the movie made... It's still awesome to hear that a big studio picked up the rights. Means that someone at least read the book and thought, "Hey, this would be a kick arse movie."

I think a lot is going to depend on how long dystopia is going to remain a popular fad. Will it be popular 5 years from now, when it comes time for the movie to be made?

I wouldn't worry about dystopia ever becoming non-profitable—in 5, 15, or 35 years. Do you really think it's just a fad? It's been a consistent moneymaker since Soylent Green (and probably much earlier). (Not that I'm saying this movie is a sure bet by any means) Last edited by DiapDealer; 05-19-2012 at 05:10 PM. |

Does it feature a plucky young heroine? (Dystopias with PYHs are big these days)
