Amazing! Calibre and Stanza talking!

As per many and varied posts over the past few months, I had been completely unable to get Stanza or Megareader to "see" the Calibre server.

Knowing this, today I fired up a newly acquired mobile wifi device and was able to use the server without issue as I had on my normal landline based network. Disconnected it, and then checked how/whether it was working with my local network... and it is.

I don't know why, or how. I hadnt tried using it for ages... so whether it was one of the recent updates to Calibre, or whether using the mobile wifi gadget beat it into submission, I have NO idea, but I dont care, I have wifi Calibre access from Stanza and I am simply overjoyed!! FINALLY everything is as it ought to be.

And now, they dont talk again. Nothing has changed. Except Stanza can't see the calibre server.

There is something seriously weird with your network.

I get that sometimes with other apps when the local address changes, though Stanza usually finds it automatically.

Ugh! Tell me about it. I'm saving for a new modem/router. However, it should also be said that it failed on the mobile broadband network i have, as well. Its seriously frustrating.

My Stanza and Calibre server interact seamlessly but then I am still stuck on the old version of Stanza and iOS 4.x!

Well, I've switched routers, modem is now in bridge mode, and still no joy. This is just crazy. REALLY crazy. I hve followed every bit of advice I've been given, and only one day (the day of the first post here) has calibre been seen by stanza (in the last 12 months or so that is)

Have you tried using a different port. For me 8080 wasn't working. I'm using 8787.

Yes, thats been suggested before. The thing is, it worked spontaneously as per my first post. I have not changed anything since then until installing the new router, but that is not responsible because until then, everything was the same. It cannot be the network, because it worked with the network. It worked when using a 3G broadband modem. Now it doesnt. I have not changed any settings on any of my devices except the information required to access the network.

The new (well its an old one, really, I should be saying replacement) router is working a treat with everything else (especially streaming to the AppleTV, and iDevices via Plex)... but the inability to use calibre with Stanza persists.

[edit] and right this minute, 20 mins after my last failed attempt, its decided to work, again. I haven't changed a thing.

Do people have a particular order of doing things? Like: Open calibre, wait for the server to start, then open Stanza. Open stanza's get books and then Calibre. Mind you, not sure why I ask, because I've tried it every which way when it fails.

24 hours later, its still working. Touch wood! Must have been my flaky wifi. Currently the old AEBS is as solid as a rock. Its possible I had not actually checked whether it was working with this since I installed it. Anyway, not tempting fate, I'm not changing *anything* from now on, until the hardware dies.

I don't rely on Bonjour (auto-detection) to recognize the Calibre server. I have the desktop hosting Calibre assigned a static IP address and have manually added the Stanza/OPDS feeds to Stanza and other apps I use.

e.g.
http://192.168.1.100:8080/stanza -> for Stanza
http://192.168.1.100:8080/opds -> for MegaReader (iOS), Mantano Reader (Android)

Can't quite believe it... another day has passed and the AEBS is doing its stuff and I can still access the calibre library. Feels like Christmas.

I'm spending a LOT of time now, editing the books, replacing the covers I don't like etc. I'll do an epub-->epub conversion when I am finished (long way to go yet) and then except for new acquisitions, will be done and dusted

As a matter of curiosity, which android device are you reading on? I was nearly going to get a Note just so I could use fbReader. OTOH when lying in bed at night, the iphone (or huawei sonic or Acer Liquid Metal) are just the right size for hand holding whilst lying down.

I've got multiple Android devices ranging from 3~10". Among them, the Xperia Ray (3.3" 480x854, 297 ppi) is my favorite for reading. Text is very clear. I haven't noticed any pixelation even when compared to the iPhone 4/4S. Backlight dims down quite low making it comfortable to use for night time reading (I use a sepia theme - can't stand white on black night mode). That's one of the reasons I couldn't read on either the Nexus S or Galaxy S 4G - the backlight just doesn't go low enough.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Xperia Ray looks so pretty. After getting just iPhones for 4 years, it's nice to have a phone that actually looks like a phone again.
