Well, it also says:

"‘How long are guarantees on consumer goods valid?’
Viktor used to live in Germany, where it is common for products to have manufacturers’ guarantees of five years."

First, this is not common in Germany and the legal period is 6 months.

Whatever "directive" means ...

Anyway, if there is a discussion about who broke the display or caused a malfunction, things can become ugly.

But many extra-european vendors pretend it's valid 1 year only, sometimes.

I.E. the Kindle DXG. I'ts sold internationally (EU too) but guarantee is 1 year, according to Amazon = EU law violation.
The same applied with Apple, they've been condemned recently for something related.

§ 438 BGB - this is the Civil Law in Germany - and it is definitely applied as I described it.

Here it says in Article 5, No 1:

The seller shall be held liable under Article 3 where the
lack of conformity becomes apparent within two years as from
delivery of the goods.

Please note, it's the seller that is held liable not the producer!
