I would guess the last "new" radio drama distributed widely in the US was probably CBSRMT, which according to my set stopped in Dec '82. Sure NPR does some BBC and a few other series are broadcast randomly, but nothing with a daily schedule. It just doesn't work over here anymore.

I think the one local station is broadcasting the "Twilight Zone" radio dramas.

It's interesting to see so many OTR junkies are readers too.

I loved the Star Wars dramatisations of the early 80's. Great stuff.

You could try 'Yes What' an Australian oldtime comedy radio serial from the 1930's. I've been listening to this off and on for 15 years now.(finally managed to get some episodes on cd a few years ago) Go here http://www.andrewhost.com/yw.html for more details or search Youtube with 'yes what' as a keyword to sample it.

Leviathan was exactly what I was looking for. Most stuff I clicked on so far this am is just a single person reading a book out loud. Need go through the other links in this thread for more clues.

There might be some small examples, but by and large, America abandoned radio as a medium for dramatic presentations long ago. I wonder if the license fees that the British pay for Television might have had something to do with it. In the first place, the BBC probably is not under quite the same ratings pressure that commercial Television/Radio is. Thus it could keep radio dramas on the air longer. Also the Television license might have kept the adoption of television low enough to keep radio dramas a major source of entertainment.

I also wonder if the way music copyrights work in UK (which I know nothing about.) In the United States, radio stations get to pay a lower royalty on music they play since it is has been accepted that it promotes music sales... that might have made music cheaper than drama programs (Which also have a lower replay value than a song).

I will second this source. Dragnet, Johnny Dollar and Gunsmoke are favorites.

Gunsmoke in particular had high production values and good actors. Some fans prefer it to the Television version. Dragnet was... well dragnet, if you saw the TV show, close your eyes and that is basically how the radio program works.

For US libraries with OverDrive accounts, search for audiobooks with "full cast".
