I can think of other ways that authors can be compensated. For one, I think a kind of subscription library (with breaks for those who are too poor to pay the standard fee) might be a good way to go. In fact, I have argued for something like that as probably the only practical way to actually end piracy. That being said, its not the law of the land yet, and likely never will be. And while copyright is the law of the land, and the best thing yet tried, I will defend authors rights to enforce those copyrights by reasonable means. I want them to write more; a lot more.

Any system that depends on that is doomed to failure. IF history has demonstrated anything, it is that there are always enough not-nice people to shipwreck any system that depends on everyone being nice to each other.

Then the idea of compensating authors if the work is useful is simply a lark, of less value than karma is here. After all, if everything is free, then money is useless.

Of course making a system like that work will probably involve taking people of moderate intelligence and putting them up against the wall....

I voted yes but I'd like to impose a proviso: the knowledge that the website distributes is guaranteed true and immutable. Otherwise the website owners should be subject to a slow and painful death, or be forced to read rubbish science fiction.
