Even cheaper iPads? How low will they go?

I just read that Apple has sold out of preorders and people are already starting to line up at the stores to get their hands on a new iPad.

With 55 million iPads already in customers' hands and the price of a new iPad 2 dropping to $399, you would expect this to cause a serious glut of used iPad 1's and 2's. Anyone else waiting for a cheap, used iPad?

Some people buy new iPads whenever its that time of the iMonth.
They just can't make enough of them.

Not necessarily (at least for the iPad 2). I know plenty of folks who only have one iPad 2 right now and have been considering buying a second and even third one. I reckon a lot of iPad 2's will get passed on to other family members.

Granted, if you still only have an original iPad, the price on refurbished iPad 2's ($349 for Wi-Fi 16GB) will severely lower the resale value.

That's what my wife's planning to do with her iPad 1 after her new one arrives - one for work, one for home...

I wouldn't be too sure; I was slightly amazed that this one sold for what it did - I guess the bigger capacity and 3G are worth more to some people than others!

Of course pricing depends on the specific model and capacity of your iPad. Still, if it had been sold earlier, the seller would've likely gotten a better price.

Here are the prices for the refurb iPads on Apple's Store:

original iPad

16GB Wi-Fi: $299; Wi-Fi + 3G: $399
32GB Wi-Fi: $399; Wi-Fi + 3G: $499
64GB Wi-Fi: $499; Wi-Fi + 3G: $599

iPad 2

16GB Wi-Fi: $349; Wi-Fi + 3G: $479
32GB Wi-Fi: $449; Wi-Fi + 3G: $579
64GB Wi-Fi: $549; Wi-Fi + 3G: $679

Oh well, at least the above gives you a semi-guideline on pricing your used iPad.

However, I do wonder how many of those so-called refurb models are actually refurbs. I didn't even see Apple put the brand-new iPad 2 32GB and 64GB models on clearance sale. All of a sudden, those were just removed from the store and they just had plenty of refurbs.

I can see Apple consistently selling the previous generation for $100 less, and the 2 generation old iPad for $200 less (if they go back that far).

One of my friends is buying my iPad 2 to give to her brother for $250, so there's always the used approach.

The price drop is also going to have an effect on Android tablets, especially previous generation (Tegra2) ones. People looking for a cheap tablet should keep an eye out for deals.

IF the rumors of a quad-core nicely specced Google tablet for $199 prove to be true they just might tho. I would love to see Apple come out with a (gasp) 7.7 inch screen Ipad for $249. I would probably buy one of each, just to balance the universe.

Yeah. Seems to have been a few here marked down a fair percentage at the cheap end.

I bought my brother a refurb iPad 2 about a month ago - the one he got was as new. You wouldn't know the difference.

I am waiting for tablets to have the power and ability of a laptop or desktop computer. Until that time my home computer will do.
