k3 vs ktouch

Does anyone have both k3 and the touch? Which do you like more and why?

I have had both for a few days, and I think that k3 has more functionality. the touch doesn't have a functional landscape which make pdf nearly impossible.and k3 has 3g, which is useful abroad.

The touch screen is nice! And the kindle itself feels nicer too, as well as in it's leather case.

I've used the touch a bit, and own a keyboard model. And, I prefer the keyboard model. I find it easier to use the actual keyboard to type and I like the page turn buttons more than swipe-to-turn-page.

I agree that swipe to turn is kind of a pain...however, the Kindle's tap to turn I find to be way better than the K3 physical buttons.

I had a K3 and sold it to fund the Touch. I only read novels. No pdfs, no taking notes, no web browsing, no bookmarks, etc. I like not having the keyboard, I like touch to turn pages and I like the smaller form factor. The new lighted cover is a bonus as I like it much better.

I vote K4 but it's not an option. It's the perfect reader for me. Thin, tiny and lightweight. I can read for hours on it.

If I have to choose between the two

I guess the Touch. I just don't like the Keyboard on the K3 but I do like the page buttons on the K3 better than the K4.

I have both. I find the KTouch more intuitive to use, more immersive and faster. By the same token I find the touch buggy and its dictionary system a mess. I also find the screen on the K3 a touch better.

KT is smaller, lighter, I find it comfortable to use without a cover (unlike my K3), and I have no plans to get a cover. Design is 'cleaner' without all those buttons, arguably less 'distracting' and looking like the PDA you might have had in the 1980's.

It is easier to select text and type (and you can type diacritics for west european languages). Navigation of Home screen and Kindle Store is easier. PDF support is significantly better (except for lack of landscape). Active Content (when available) is actually almost 'nice' (unlike most AC for button Kindles). And it has XRay. Script support is more complete: Indic scripts seem to work, Arabic and Hebrew almost work but maybe will require KF8 before R2L text layout is handled correctly.

Amazon has promised an update for some level of KF8 support, I believe they will also be adding localized UI option (like K4), plus whatever refinements they choose to add (including screen orientation option, with any luck). I think K3 has seen its last update (i.e. will never support KF8).

Web browsing should be better, but there is no equivalent of page up/down AFAICT so reading articles and scrolling Kindle Store item descriptions is a little annoying, as there are no tap zones and swiping only scrolls about a half a screen (at least the way I'm doing it, and I have tried a lot of variations).

As mewmartigan points out, you can tap or swipe in reading mode, though swipe is a good way to avoid accidentally de-referencing hyperlinks (footnotes etc.) when these are present, or to page back when holding with right hand (with thumb). Speaking of hyperlinks, those are easier to jump to (well. it requires a little too much accuracy at small text sizes, hopefully they will make hyperlink tap zones a bit larger with an update).

On the minus side, KT will probably never have margin/font/justification/screensaver hack, or image viewer, and has no 3G web browsing. It's not possible to extend selection to adjacent page, and it's not possible to select a word and then use that for search (though most people probably never discover how to do that on K3). The UI could be more polished, but the same is very much true of every Kindle to date.

I do hope everyone with a Touch is sending things to kindle-feedback. Amazon should not be allowed to think that it is perfect and complete in every way, and there's still a chance some improvements could make it into the update.

Love my Touch, particularly when using it at the gym, where it is easier to tap the screen than push the physical button.

I kept jumping chapters on the kindle touch. Never had that problem on the nook touch.

So, I still use my K3 with lighted cover.

I own both. The only issues I have with the Touch are probably temporary. The old magazine format still used at places like Kindlefeeder doesn't work on the Touch, which is a pain in the neck. Also, there are few apps that work on the Touch, and I was used to playing Scrabble on tke K3.
I still lean toward the K3 because of those things, but once everything catches up, I'll go full-on with the Touch.

I've used all the kindles except 1 and the k3 works the best for me (I don't have normal hand). In fact, the k3 may be the last kindle I can use comfortably w/o sone kind of modification. Right now, it doesn't matter since the screen hasn't improved any.

I think that you should make it clearer that the poll is for people who have both the K3 and the Touch.

Having both; personally I far prefer the Touch. It's smaller and lighter, the touch interface works extremely well, and things like dictionary lookup work much better on the touchscreen. Landscape mode is irrelevant to me; I never use it on the K3, and don't miss it on the Touch.

Are you tapping the screen to turn pages? If you are swiping the screen instead, an upward swipe jumps a chapter. Perhaps if you are swiping at an angle its interpreting the wrong way.

I honestly can't imagine how it's possible to accidentally select the previous or next chapter. As you say, that involves an up/down swipe, which is completely different to turning a page.

I prefer the Kindle Basic which isn't on the poll. I do not care for touch screens. I know they're the way of the future but so is euthanasia. The Kindle Keyboard would be my second choice. I can really only use the keyboard model with a NoKey skin. Otherwise I need a bright LED light and a magnifying glass to read the keys. Nothing on earth could get me to buy a Fire and join the ranks of game-playing fools who ask on the forums, "How do I turn my Fire on?" Pushing buttons makes sense to me. Tap, tap-tap, swipe, pinch, spread, smudge, and oops don't make sense to me. I have chuckled at the comments about dangling jewelry and sweater cuffs making the Touch change pages and close the cover moving the Touch from where you finished reading.

Anyway, I vote for the apparently non-existent Kindle Basic.
