Transfer files to the KT with Wifi?

Hi,

is there a way to transfer files to the KT _over Wifi_ without using Whispersync?

Maybe with the help of the jailbreak, usbnet and a simple transfer utility?

I want to use this with a Win OS (7 atm), allowing me to define the destination folder for a file (e.g. root dir or /books /documents etc.).

Tia,

You can do it with a service such as DropBox, or using the Calibre web server.

Yes, with usbnet you can copy files to your Kindle via SCP (or SFTP if you install additional binary).

If you enable SSH over wifi by adding an iptables rule (see yifanlu's simple usbnet hack for the kindle touch), then you can use sshfs on the host pc to mount the kindles entire file system on a host PC.

You can also install an sftp server on the client. This is already done for you with the usbnet hack for kindle 3 and earlier. You can copy the file yourself to your kindle if it is not already installed.

With sftp, you can then use WinSCP (as suggested by miguelos above). I use WinSCP on my windows box. It lets you browse your kindle filesystem in a explorer window.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I think I'll use the sftp version (in this case I can use my normal sftp client on my win box).

One additional question: The KT has a predefined ip (192.168.15.x) iirc. Is it possible to change it (my router operates in the 192.168.1.x network and I don't want to change that if I can avoid it)?

I would think that your Kindle should be getting its IP address, along with other network configuration information, from your Wifi router via DHCP.

The 15 subnet is only used by the usbnet. Wifi networking will get an ip address from your router. In fact, you can change the usb network settings, but each interface must have a different IP subnet.

It would be a problem if your wifi network also uses 192.168.15.x addresses.

So the ssh / sftp connection to the KT must be established through the normal (DHCP -> Wifi -> KT (192.168.1.x)) ip address (regardless of the different subnet ip of the usbnet interface)?

usb connection = must be 192.168.15.x subnet IP by default
wifi = any subnet IP as long as it's not 192.168.15.x should work, need to install sftp-server for sftp -> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...27&postcount=1

How do you tell the Kindle framework (in my case the K4NT) to rescan for new books? Restart work, but it's overkill (and slow). The only other way I found was to plug the Kindle into the PC via USB, then disconnecting, but that defeats the purpose. Is there a better way?

Had my KT on the usb cable today (to recharge it) and installed all the necessary components. Usbnet will be started automatically and I can get access to the device through my favorite sftp client (FlashFXP). Thanks for all the input!

Thanks for that! I can make that an alias and that will solve my problem.

I'm sure there's a Kindle framework command that does the same thing though, without resorting to a using dbus to simulate a USB unplug.

I never found any on my K3, but it might be different with new Kindles. But Amazon had no need for such a function. This event is sent from framework itself when you unplug USB while in mass storage. They expect you were doing some changes to the files and want to rescan them.
