this device wants to be used - unlike my iPad that i use for couch surfing and half-hearted work emailing, i could never really get into using it as an ebook reader - the device is just wrong for that purpose.

Congrats to you both! It's a really great eReader. I love mine! It just went on its first trip and made it back without any problems. I love the Marware Eco-flip case I bought. I changed the font on mine and it's perfect for reading for hours.

I picked up an M Edge Go Jacket and an E-Luminator light to go with it. I'm all set.

If you can put the PDF files on DropBox they're fairly easy to get to.

Another option (that I haven't tried, but read about) is the GoodReader app.

Still prefer eInk myself, just giving you some options.

Got an M-Edge as well, don't know if I will like it though. Even if I don't I will order a sleeve for my new Fire.

my option was to say goodbye to the closed world of the iAnything. it's a huge hassle to limit people to being constrained. i guess creative people need wrangled by the handlers at Apple

Cool falls short

2 - weight/form factor - the iPad is simply too heavy and too large to hold comfortably
3 - LCD fatigue - my eyes really start to bother me after 30 minutes of looking at the LCD.

a final, and very important issue is the inability to add a title to the collection from just about anywhere. i am in the IT industry and have to read a ton of white papers in PDF format. dropping them into Calibre, converting to MOBI and uploading them at the office onto the Kindle is as trivial as sending it an email.

That's funny because Apple computers were always considered the creative persons computer.

Bought my 8 (nearly 9) year old niece a Kindle for Christmas. She is back in Blighty so limited in choice, but got her the K3 without a keyboard and my sister says that it is officially her best ever Christmas present. It is loaded up with Horrible Histories and other such gruesome stuff, and has rarely been out of her hands.

I'm a happy Aunty!

A Kindle without a keyboard would make it a Kindle 4, the latest version (non-touch screen). Sounds like you got her a great gift

I thought that having read the Harry Potter series and seen the movies had tought me all I needed to know about modern British slang, but I had to google "Blighty' to understand your post. We never seem stop learning! But that's a good thing.

Yikes, hope you are not talking about me! I'm a huge fan of at least some Apple products.
But one thing I don't enjoy doing on my iPhone, or any LCD screen, is reading; e-ink is so much better for that.
I actually have mixed feelings about Apple as a company these days. The iPhone is brilliant for what it does, but they are interfering in the publishing industry in ways that are raising the price of eBooks for everyone.
