Because the page numbers correspond to the pages in the printed book. You Kindle does not display the pages the same way, as the font size changes, and the page size is different.

yea but I don't care if 3 page turns = 1 page or if 1 page turn = one page, it is still more intuitive to me.

I agree locations are useless. If a book doesn't have page numbers, I will go by percentage done. That can be misleading though if the back of the book has a appendix, or a preview of the next book, etc. I just finished a book where the actual content was done at 88%, haha.

EDIT: I think locations are mainly used for whispersync to get an exact spot in the book.
Locations are part of the format. Mobipocket has always had bugs when it came to page numbers. Locations were fine. Mobipocket has had locations long before the Kindle. But now that Amazon has added page numbers, page numbers should be reliable.

Not all eBooks at Amazon have page numbers.

Again thanks so much.
Is there room for both the page # and the location/percent?

ADE on my 650 displays page numbers and if there has to be 38 of 253 two times because of the font size, then so be it. But it's there and it works.

Amazon could do the same thing.

I also prefer page number, but percentage works fine for me. Loc info loses much of its meaning at a glance especially when it gets to 5 digits, and I certainly don't need to see it all the time when I'm reading it.
I prefer the way Nook STR works for this, it shows both page number and how much there is left for the chapter.
