New source format .xz

Hi,

the format of the source packaging has changed from .gz to .xz. Does anybody know what program do i need to open this one ? Haven't found anything on the web and RAR won't open it.

Is there a reason for changing from the "standard" gzip format to this (to me) unknown compression format?

Calibre didn't change anything and doesn't use this format. The OP is finding books in this format somewhere, presumably on the web.

The OP actually says:

I interpreted that to mean that he was referring to the packaging of the Calibre source code. My apologies if this is not so.

You are right. I hadn't noticed this change, as I get my source from launchpad using bzr.

I have no idea why Kovid changed the source tarball to .xz.

From the whats-new page:

Distribute calibre source code compressed with xz instead of gzip for a 40% reduction in size

All modern linux distros can handle xz and on windows, IIRC, winrar can handle xz.

As I understand it the .xz format has significantly better compression than gzip. For many source archives I have seen the .xz one is only about half the size of the .gz equivalent when both are available.

Do believe xz uses LZMA compression similar to 7z. Much more efficient. I actually wish Calibre would add support for 7z+LZMA for compressed HTML.
