Wanted some thoughts and pointers

Which one for me...

I am in the process of deciding which dedicated e-reader to get. and could do with a little guidance.

I'm in the UK so the selection is not as good as that in the US. I've narrowed it down to

Kindle, Sony, Kobo

currently I use Aldiko on my Archos 101 so all 160 books i have are epub (and all available free). it would be nice to port all of them to the new reader when I get it. so either the Sony or Kobo would be a selection, and they are also "touch". having said that I'm not anti Kindle either.

I've also read of customer service issues with the Kobo, and the T1 is still quite new.

I'm also thinking of using the reader to house my notes for when I go out to speaking engagements. These are normally written up in MS Word. which means transfering them through another piece of software and of that I have no experience so any input there might be useful

If you buy a Kindle you'll have to convert all 160 epub books - a real pain.

Many of them i am sure are available free for Kindle aswell, but some are not I have about 40 H Rider Hagard books and many of them are not "Kindled" yet. I have the alternative LCD reader on my Archos so transfering is not necessarily essential.

I've read that returning Kindles if they go wrong is less traumatic than Kobo or sony.

It took me less then 30 minutes to download, import, remove DRM, and convert 300 books when I finally decided to do it. It was not that hard and took hardly any time.

I would wait on the Sony to see if they have fixed the glitches that the device has been having. If they have, the Sony looks like a nice device. The Nook is a nice device. I have read mixed reviews about the Kobo.

Personally, I love my Kindle. I had the original and now use either a DXG or the K3. I have not had any problems with my Kindles. They work great and I love the Amazon book store.

Amazon has great customer service. The vast majority of people who have problems with their Kindles have had no problems getting the problems fixed. Amazon sends replacements one or two day delivery. Just make sure that you call Kindle Support and not Amazon support. There is a difference.

Of the ones you mention, I'd recommend the Kindle for anyone in the UK. Mainly because of their terrific customer service. Having said that, I did read somewhere that they might not be quite as generous with replacements for the new models as they have been with the Kindle 3 models.

Have you considered getting the CyBook Opus? Granted, it's not the most up-to-date ebook reader, using visiplex eInk rather than pearl eInk, but it is hi-res (200dpi), and is currently only £50 from Waterstones!

Oh - and it also reads ePub. (& mobipocket if you switch to the other official firmware.)

I personally love my Kobo. I won't defend the customer service (which needs serious work), but they are actively improving the firmware/adding features all the time. If possible get your hands on them and try them out (realizing that most demo models may not have the most current firmware so may lack fixes or new features).

For your notes, Calibre will do a nice job of converting them to e-pub. Haven't done it in a bit, but I think I just saved them as RTF files from Word then converted in Calibre. Very fast and easy process that should work well on Sony or Kobo. I would assume it could likely convert it Mobi for a Kindle but I can't say for sure.

Converting e-pub books to Kindle format is invisible with Calibre (installing a plug-in may be required). Simply plug your Kindle in and copy the books from Calibre to the Kindle. Calibre converts each file as it is copied to the Kindle.
