I really would like to have an irex

Only problem would be the battery part. I know it's the best to read pdf files which is my main reason to buy it. But don't you people worry about the battery when it dies? Then we need to send it back to have it replaced. What a hassle and that's the reason that I still can't make up my mind.

All batteries loose effectivenesses with age, but I don't recall any posts about batteries dying. There was an upgrade program for V1 iLiads to the (larger) V2 battery, but that was because iRex advertised the iLiad would last longer between charges than it actually did.

Thank you for your reply. But I was told the battery charges 400 times. If I charge it every two days, the battery is good for a year and half, what happens after that? Is my calculation correct?

That seems like a low number. However, lithium batteries do have a finite number of charge cycles, but that is for a complete discharge to recharge state. For example, recharging a battery from a 50% discharge state would only count as one half of one charge. It's for this reason that it is recommended to recharge lithium batteries frequently as opposed to some of the older type of batteries like NiMH that would develop a "memory" and frequent charging would actually reduce their capacity. This explanation does simplify things somewhat, but it is essentially accurate.

400 times sounds like worst-case scenario... This page holds a lot of info about batteries.

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm Did you know, when not using a lithium battery, you best store it with 40% charge level in the refrigerator? At this state there is hardly time wear... Altough I don't know how the IlIad eInk display likes/dislikes the refrigerator I wouldn't advice it ![]() I consider the Iliad to be pretty battery friendly in having a low discharge rate... since it can go 15 hours with a single charge. I just hope they don't use any more than 4.2V to charge it ![]() Well as far as I look over the page, handled with care, not daily discharging the iLiad completly, you could as well get at 1000 charge cycle times, and be say 60% of original capacity. Still makes me wonder why they didn't make it a replaceable part in the backside or something like that... seems to be the new "apple" idea, to make batteries unchangeable by user.

One more point. All of the various ereaders use similar battery technology and most of them don't have user replaceable batteries so the same issue will exist with most of the reader options that currently exist. The only exception I'm aware of is the Kindle which has a user replaceable battery. In general use the iLiad gets me through many days of reading and has easily lasted me through 10 hour international flights. I would love to see it last longer like the sony, but it is sufficient.

Well, there's "officially user replaceable" and "DIY user replaceable". If my iLiad were out of warranty and I needed a new battery, I would have no problems buying the battery online and opening the iLiad to replace it myself. I've done the same thing on Palms several times.

Officially you're not supposed to do it, but the warranty is already void assuming your original battery lasted longer than a year, and (at least with the Palm) it's really not that difficult to do. I haven't had to do it on my iLiad yet, but that's my plan for when I do. The price iRex charges to replace the battery is ridiculously expensive. |

amgoforth, I found zooming took a bit of practice, but now I'm very happy with the results. You could try selecting a paragraph to view by drawing the line from bottom left to top right of the area you wish to zoom. Leave a little space for left and right margins.

The zoom isn't very far, so a small line/circle/dot will cause it to zoom all the way. |
