Kindle for Troops can use your old Kindle

With so many folks upgrading to the new Kindle, or planning to soon, it seems like a good time to mention Kindle for Troops (K4T), a program that enables you to donate your pre-owned Kindle reader to a soldier who is deployed overseas.

The organization will accept Kindle 2 (US or International) or Kindle 3 (Wi-Fi or 3G) ereaders that are still in good working order and have a working battery charger. Donations are tax-deductible in the U.S. Details are available at http://ebooksfortroops.org/donate-a-kindle/, and lots of pictures are on the organization's Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ebooksfortroops. In some of the photos, you can see the camo covers donated to the project by M-Edge. The non-profit organization also accepts dollars to purchase new Kindles for the troops, for those who can't bear to part with their beloved Kindle, or who, like me, own a different device. |

What I was going for is this: everyone is entitled to do what they want, to set up donation schemes for whatever they want.

But: in my opinion, this is just lame... Why would western soldiers need free Kindles? If they read, they will be able to buy them for themselves, if they don't, they won't need them. The aren't: in prison, underprivileged, poor or uneducated (or any combination of these), how would donating them free Kindles improve their situation (other than it being nice to get stuff for free that others have to buy from money the earn). I question the general purpose of this organization not because I have no respect for soldiers (it might have come out wrong, I apologize) but because it puts emphasis on something they are not doing: they are not heroically defending any nation (or less polemically, working and living) anywhere in materially restrained circumstances, something which would justify them having something for free that should better go to other people (see above). |

No spare Kindles because I like to keep an extra here in case one breaks, but I sent a cash donation via Paypal.

Johnny - while I respect your right to support or not support any cause based on your own values and desire ... your post kind of came across as a sneering tone of "why do they need kindles anyway? porn?" and then claims that every solider is wealthy enough to just buy their own.

The first, I'm just going to skip over. The second, I think the financial condition of many of the rank and file service members is debatable - many of them are poor educationally and financially. But that isn't relevant to some of us, I'm not interested in seeing their W-2 income to know whether or not I'll assist in this case. Not every cause needs to be based on financial need. Sometimes people just give show of appreciation and support to improve morale. |

It's also pretty difficult to get reading material for them. We have a donation program at our church for the troops and one of the most requested items is reading material. This is a good program, whether we agree with the politics that got the military there or not. Not sure if you are a veteran or not, but it isn't all fun and games. Last year, one of my co-workers had a son deployed to Iraq. He sent his son regular "care packages" of snacks, etc. and always came by my office to ask for used paperbacks - his son had told him that troops were desperate for reading material in English - so every care package was lined with a layer of mystery & sci-fi paperbacks.

Let me tell you, when I was deployed, I *could* order my own things on the rare occasion I could access the internet, and then I usually had to wait about 6 weeks or more to receive it. When I had the chance, I ordered basics that I couldn't get at the ships store, not really extras.

But when I received a package, be it from family with treats or a letter from a kindergartner with a cute drawing and an almost illegible, but super sweet note, it would make my MONTH. There isn't room for a bunch of books on board a ship or in a pack, so a kindle or reading device would have been a godsend. As it was, I didn't read. This seems like a really neat program, OP thanks for posting it! |

Your attitude about our troops is disturbing. If you want to argue for or against our current wars, that's fine. In the meantime our troops, aka our kids, are giving their lives, limbs, in short they are giving it all for very little pay. Your post makes me feel like donating my K3 and buying a new one.
