Refurbished NC from Overstock

I ordered one when it was on sale and it came today.

Ha! Storage capacity is only 1GB!

I can't imagine why they'd change it. It shipped with the 1.2.0 update and I guess I'm wondering how much storage capacity I'll lose with future updates.

Hmmmm.

Have all you NC owners updated to 1.3.0 and, if so, was it worth it?

Otherwise, the thing looks new and is performing just as well as my original one.

The old NC partitioning model had a 1 GB hidden partition for apps, and a 5 GB partition for all other B&N content and sideloaded content. When they started to sell apps people were running out of space to store apps.

The new NC partitioning model has a 5 GB hidden partion for all B&N content, and a 1 GB partition for sideloaded content. You can add a microSD card if you need more space for sideloaded content.

This refurbished one doesn't have the hidden 5GB, though. I'm mostly concerned about using up what little space there is now with future updates. I did order a 32GB microSD, though, so maybe I'll just quit fretting and go with it.

The 5 GB partition is hidden. You cannot see it as a user. It is invisible.
As a user you only can see the 1 GB partition which is used for sideloaded content.

I see it on my original Nook Color. When I hook it up to the computer it shows the capacity as 5GB under properties.

When I do the same thing on my refurbished one, it shows 1GB storage capacity.

I'll probably go ahead and keep it, though. I love mine and this one would be for my sister who doesn't have any kind of e-reader, but loves reading more than eating or sleeping. I can get a lot of books transferred even onto the puny internal storage...the external card will be filled up with audiobooks and ... more books.

She'll love it.

Dian, your computer will not see the hidden 5 GB on the new Nook. It is there however. That is used by the Nook for all of the books you get from B&N, plus the space for the OS. The 1 GB you see is for your sideloaded content. There is the same amount of space on the new and old Nook. It is just that B&N decided it would hold the 5 GB in reserve. With your 32 GB card, you won't have to worry about space anyway.

Doh...I finally get it! Excellent, since that means that all the current and future updates will be installed in the hidden partition and not my itsy bitsy 1GB for side-loaded stuff. I think lol.

I got mine yesterday! It was such a good deal that I couldn't resist!

I did end up buying a 4 gb sd card for extra storage. I also rooted it and I'm loving the Kindle app on it. I like it better than the B&N reader.

Which B&N reader? The one that comes with the Nook Color, the one that comes with the Nook, the one that comes with the Nook STR, or the one available to Android devices? (I'm just kidding B&N, I like your products. I just don't understand why you have so many teams working on the same software for the same platform, forcing me to pick-and-choose between the features that each does well.)

If you are into managing your own library (e.g., a calibre user), then check out Aldiko. It is still my favorite in terms of loading books, configurability of the book presentation, and overall functionality.
