![]() There was a show on ... Discovery Channel I think it was, some years ago (back when DSC was new) called something like "Backyard Bandits" that followed the war between bird-feeder owners and squirrels. After seeing that I have absolutely no trouble believing they furry little buggers are conspiring against pretty much anyone they catch sight of. |

Being a country boy, I too enjoy squirrels - with dumplings.

The grey squirrel has now reached Scotland:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...ds/7364769.stm It's not just Zelda's father's garden that they're after. It's world domination (or at least those areas with nuts). |

Patricia, I don't suppose feeding the squirrels would make things better, would it? I tried everything to keep them out of our bird feeders and finally decided instead to try to accomodate them by adding sunflower seeds to the mix and also hanging an ear of corn now and then. They happily feed a few times a day but they seem to be generally less annoying now. I was worried that their numbers would increase, but generally we have only a few that come around as far as I can tell.

Okay, I would like to take back that stupid suggestion. Having skimmed the BBC stories I see now that this is quite more serious than a couple of annoying little critters in your garden.

Powdered coyote or fox urine is the best way to keep your home and yard free of tree rats.

Interesting. There aren't many coyotes in Wales, so finding urine (powdered or otherwise) might be difficult. My squirrels and the urban foxes seem to get on well together. Maybe American squirrels are more timid?

You can get anything on the internet! However, I don't know if UK squirrels will know that they should be afraid of American coyotes ....
![]() I think it may be more a matter of American coyotes being pretty nasty critters, compared to foxes of any stripe ... er, color. ![]() Perhaps wolf urine would be a better possibility? |

On the other hand, the Mega-Sonic Scatter-Cat Repeller (with laser sight! no, really!) looks like it'd be a lot more fun than any old predator piddle.

No longer is it just about the grey squirrel seeking domination over our beloved red , but we now have the black squirrel trying to gain a foothold in the south of England .
Obviously not just a case of everything being black and white .... btw the moral of the original squirrel story appears to have been lost in the translation ........ somewhere ... |
