I think that the iPad not supporting Flash was a major reason for some major websites switching to HTML5, or offering a HTML5 version. Not that they wouldn't have done it eventually, but they were pushed into it by the iPad.

I think the fact that both Apple and Microsoft have come out heavily in favor of HTML5 has been a big factor:

So... we're saying that all the various HTML5 specs will have reached that magic "Implemented and widely deployed" status by 2016? Or are we just talking about browsers that may have cherry-picked their favorite portions of HTML5?

There's no such thing as an "HTML5 browser." Many browsers already support certain HTML5 specs (including mobile browsers). And I'm sure that more browsers will support more specs in the future, but calling something an "HTML5" browser is foolish and misleading.

Sure it might have influenced some sites, but HTML5 is in the works and has been in the works. It's not because Apple chose to have it's iPhones and iPads not support flash. The industry has been moving to HTML5 because HTML4, applets, Flash are not a good enough solution. The advancement is a result of all the big players, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and yes Adobe (just to name a few)

You forgot another major player Google. But my point wasn't one company was responsible for it's advancement it was the industry.

Right-I was referring more to moving from Flash to HTML5-both Apple and Microsoft have specifically mentioned the issues they had with Flash, while Google doesn't seem to have any real issues with it as a long term solution.

I wonder if Microsoft made any mention of the limitations of Silverlight

You might be interested to note that Google+ has made a good amount of their online games HTML5 based.

True, and they did move mobile Youtube off of Flash, for which I'm grateful
But they bundled it with Chrome, a move I just found a bit odd.
