I do not like classics. How do you know something is a classic? Is Sherlock Holmes classics? If it was going to catch the series Harvard Classics why not have a series category?

You are right. And it doesn't say much about the content of the book. So putting Sherlock Holmes, to take your example, into Mystery would be more explanatory.

Without a Classic genre, I'd recommend to add Poetry to the list.

or, perhaps we could change "short fiction" to "short works" (or "short subjects" or something...). then, it could include : plays (where do they go currently ?), poetry, essays, short stories, novellas... and possibly other things which i am forgetting. what do you think ? or is it bad to mix fiction and non-fiction ?

[EDIT : in any case i do think it's important to have a category to put poetry.]

Ahhh, it's really not easy, is it?

I picked Short Fiction because it's a well known genre. You're right, Poetry is important and has been added to the list.

Now, when you refer to essays, novellas, plays, it seems to me like a different approach of categorizing e-books. One is to categorize genres according to content; the other is to categorize according to type or style of writing. The difficulty here is that we're trying to mix these two which doesn't seem to work very well.

Perhaps it was suggested earlier, but maybe it would be easiest to see how book vendors (Sony, Amazon, B&N, etc.) classify them.

Sony has some plays under Classics, some under Humanities, some under Language, some under Arts,..... Okay, this is not helpful. B&N has no categories at all, just a search engine. Amazon...okay I think that's too complicated. Sorry. I will go away now.

yes i see what you mean. i think the list seems pretty good now. obviously a novella can be placed in "fiction" for example. but perhaps we could have *tags* for novella, play, etc. ; the best of all worlds, in a sense. but since we began categorizing by content, we should continue like that, otherwise we will never get anywhere !

The beauty of tags is that they are free to choose and can be added by anyone.

i thought they were defined in advance, like the categories. forget i said anything.

It is all Great Literature, whether of Science, History, Biography or etc.

Why would 50 volumes all have the same Genre. Each volume should have its own which will solve part of the problem at least.

Ok... Adventure could work in addition. I will prepare those prefixes and should we come up with any difficulties later on (something missing, ambiguity, ...) we can still change'em.

I am working on a genre wiki entry to help users pick the correct one. I will add Adventure today.

Actually, instead of "Adventure" we should use "Action". "Adventure" is too limiting, and should better be added as a tag.

There seems to be a genre called action adventure. From the Don Pendleton wikipedia entry:

i think thriller definitely goes better in action / adventure than in mystery. however it could be a tag, rather than a category.
