Hmm, maybe the Karma machine does need a tune-up - my 150000 first went up by 10000 (courtesy DixieGal) and, according to the note left by The Terminator, should've gone up by only 34000. I was never good at math, but shouldn't my total now be 194000, instead of 213644 |

^That's the best thing about karma. Just when you think you understand it, you don't. Enlightenment is so hard to achieve. Now I just need to get back to ridding myself of my comparing mind....oh, I see beppe's got 23032000, wow...dangit...okay...empty my thoughts...I am my breath...

On the topic of karma, I find that when I read a comment I really like and decide to give someone some karma, I'll usually back out of it if I see that they already have vastly more karma than I do. It would feel like trying to slip a millionaire a $1 tip for being nice. I know it's silly, that all karma is appreciated, but it's a feeling that's hard to shake. Does anyone else have the same hang-up?

Try to overcome it. I appreciate all Karma given, whoever gives it. In this case, it really is the thought (& comment) that count, not the amount of Karma.

And another thought: rkomar, following your very helpful posts in the Pocketbook subforum and comparing your karma points with those of many others here around let's me think one more time how very much this fine karma idea goes wrong these days. One of my alltime favourite posts in this forum: Quote:

On second thoughts, Karmalot is a silly place. Let's not go there. Karma has become utterly meaningless in the two and a half short years I've been a daily visitor and contributor here (not because I came here), and this thread has become silly enough to prove it. If negative karma was possible, I'd no doubt lose my own immediately through this single post alone. This thread must have generated enough wasted karma to devalue the system to the extent that it has now been proven to be a less than useless guide to a member's true value to our group. I tend to welcome all newcomers (no karma potential) only offer technical advice when I can (severely limiting my contribution to such threads) and comment very seriously and, I hope, constructively where I can offer sound assistance in my own specialised field (and as has been mentioned, that attracts no brownie points). I ignore threads that are frivolous and not e-reading specific (I don't want or need to know what's in your wardrobe or in your glass or on your dinner plate or what someone's favourite soup recipe is) and those as the threads where worthless karma seems to be spawned. Maybe someone should post a simple poll (I'm far too busy to do it myself) one quick question 'should karma be scrapped'. Two options only; 'yes' or 'no'. No invitation to explain why (that's already been covered here and in earlier threads on the subject). Then mods should take note of the result and act upon it. My own vote would be for 'yes' it should be scrapped because -- well intentioned as it was -- it has become abused and is utterly useless in terms of a member's true value to the community here. Best wishes and heart-felt karma to all ... but not in numbers and not in this (I believe) redundant thread. Neil |

But the appreciation, the smiles, the puns, the personal touch, the playfulness behind a karma that is given, especially so if it is for something that I put some thought in, that is where the real pleasure is. I remember when I started, that one of the moderators wrote that were the small k's of a newbie that gave him most pleasure. It's true. I experience the same. Of course an old friend winking at me is a very pleasant thing also. Also, sometime I get myself in trouble in a discussion, then a k arrives in support. Well, that makes me feel very warm. It encourages me to keep it up, being foolish and being controversial. Being funny, cynical, sentimental. All these things together. Lombard tradition. The inflation of k changed the scale, that's for sure. But I think it positive that there is a much larger k volume going around. It makes contacts more lively. And that I think is the purpose, not so much the ranking. Ranking of what? | ||
