Interesting charts, thanks! I am surprised at the 36% of people reading ebooks on computers still-I thought that would be a lot lower.


But some of those numbers seem odd:

In 2010, an estimated 10.3 million tablets and 6.7 million ereaders were sold. As far as ereaders are concerned, the Kindle remains the most popular unit, followed by Barnes & Noble’s Nook.

Apple alone sold 14.8 million tablets in 2010. Curious where they got the 6.7 million ereader number.

Apple’s lead in the tablet area is at least partly due to the fact that competitors’ offerings are still relatively nascent. To date, Apple has sold 15 million iPad and iPad 2 units.

Actually, to date, Apple has sold over 28.7 million iPad and iPad 2 units.

Actually, to date, Apple has sold over 28.7 million iPad and iPad 2 units.

Seems the article is a mish-mash of old/badly researched data drawing conclusions to meet decisions about the articles previously decided results.

Agreed, I'm not surprised that tablets sold more than ereaders.

The share of adults in the United States who own an e-book reader doubled to 12% in May, 2011 from 6% in November 2010. E-readers, such as a Kindle or Nook, are portable devices designed to allow readers to download and read books and periodicals. This is the first time since the Pew Internet Project began measuring e-reader use in April 2009 that ownership of this device has reached double digits among U.S. adults.

Tablet computers—portable devices similar to e-readers but designed for more interactive web functions—have not seen the same level of growth in recent months. In May 2011, 8% of adults report owning a tablet computer such as an iPad, Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Xoom. This is roughly the same percentage of adults who reported owning this kind of device in January 2011 (7%), and represents just a 3 percentage-point increase in ownership since November 2010. Prior to that, tablet ownership had been climbing relatively quickly.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., March 10, 2011 - According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 (4Q10) - more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the third quarter. Apple's share came down from 93% in 3Q10 to 73% in 4Q10, but still reflected Apple's strong leadership position. Samsung's Galaxy Tab was the primary competitor in the holiday season, beating other players to market and capturing more than 17% share, while a number of smaller regional players also participated.

The Tracker showed that the eReader market also picked up significantly in the fourth quarter. Strong sales of Amazon's Kindle, which was refreshed in August and priced more aggressively, as well as significant gains from competitors such as Pandigital, Barnes & Noble, Hanvon, and Sony among others, contributed to market growth.

In 4Q10, the eReader market more than doubled volume from the previous quarter, with more than 6 million units shipped for the quarter, bringing the full-year total to 12.8 million units shipped. eReader shipments were also up more than 325% from 2009 when roughly 3 million units shipped. The strong growth reflects a more competitive offering as well as widening interest in the category, including a boost from media tablet press and much lower pricing.

Several people I know who had eReaders and got iPads, are NOT getting rid of their eReaders.

They prefer them for reading.
