Reviews of the iriver Story HD are lackluster. They software seems to be not all that wonderful. There is at least one good review on MR of the HD.

Can't you just convert certain ebook files to a different format?

You can buy books in Mobi format from lots of places and read them on the Kindle. The only thing you're "locked-in" to Amazon for is DRM'd books such as those from the Agency pubs and I guess for me personally I say so what. Yes I can shop more places for DRM'd books with a Nook or Sony etc., but it's not like it really matters with Agency stuff and on the things that can be discounted Amazon's just as competitive as everywhere else. Yes, it can be done quite easily most of the time. For DRM'd books it will take the removal of the DRM infection, but if you're willing to do that it can be done in a few seconds once you have the necessary plug-ins or scripts set up. |

I'm not sure, but didn't Amazon just come out with a new DRM that is virtually unbreakable? I thought I saw something like that from Alf? I don't know because I don't have any Kindle books. I think the Kindle is pretty good for what you wan't (Web browser sucks though) . The Nook and Kobo touch are nice too but the Kobo touch doesn't have physical page turn buttons which can be annoying from what I've heard (The Nook is touch and buttons) . I haven't tried out the Sony so I can't give an opinion on it, except that it is Sony. Remember that if you go with a Kindle you can buy from almost any other company that has the option to download the Adobe E-pub version, which you can strip of DRM and convert to MOBI using Calibre and plug-ins. Same for library books but that might be illegal in your country. But if you go for the Kindle you might want to wait a few months, because the new one is rumored to be Color E-ink and touch. So if it can wait a while you might want to. Last edited by The Terminator; 07-22-2011 at 12:32 PM. |

If people do not know enough to be able to buy books from vendors other than the one that sold their ereader, then they will be locked into the Sony store, or Barnes and Noble, just as much as they would be locked into Amazon. All agency books cost the same, no matter where you buy them.

For an extra $20, I would take the Kindle with a better screen (Kindle has a Pearl e-ink screen) and less weight (Kindle weighs 8.7 ounces vs. Nook 12.1 ounces).
