Darn, I've just realized that my iPod Touch is also impossible to hold! I'm going to have to return it too.

I would say this reviewer spent about 10 minutes trying out the Kobo and then wrote the review. There are lots of ways to hold that aren't a problem with thumbs hitting the screen. And guess what buddy: even when the activity indicator is spinning after you open a book you can change a page (and more often than not it's done by the time you get done reading to the bottom of the 1st page). Very poorly done review.

Plus around 2000 Franklin had a line of three readers called the Franklin eBookman 9XX series(one had 8MB no backlight, 16MB no backlight, and a 16MB with a backlight). IIRC the company that makes(sell?) the ectaco reader still sells the backlit model but it's price is pretty steep.

Plus, while not a dedicated reader ALOT of us used our Palms to reader and got book from the Peanut Press bstore which later was bought out by Palm and became Palm Books plus the reader app.
I can go back a lot farther still--try 1991 and the Sony Bookman with monochrome screen (no backlight). See photo. It used Sony mini-discs. Unfortunately Sony did what they often do and failed to support it with more than just a very few dozen books. I had one of these clamshell book readers. I then spent over a decade reading on Palm, Clie, and WM PDAs. Not only were the Palm screens small, even the TX, they had very low resolution. I think the Palm TX was 320 x 480 pixels. But it worked for a reader as I read hundreds of books on the Palm TX!

Forgot about that one, and with good reason: HORRIBLE form factor, but I guess it was the best they could do at that time...

I used my upgraded IIIx (8M RAM/4M flash TRG's XTRA XTRA PRO upgrade board). 240x240 IIRC mono screen, but that's what I wanted a monochrome screen so I could actually read it in sunny/brightly lit areas... used it until I dropped it once to often and cracked the upper left corner of the screen... still need to track down a replacement screen...

ebookman: yeah batt life was short and mine was one of the ones with the faulty caps. Wasn't a design defect per se but a Taiwanese company corporate espionage phail whale. They tried to ripoff a Japanese's companies elecrolyte formula for their caps and stole the wrong one... oops... so the world went through alot of failing caps for a few years as they APPEARED to be as good as the Japanese cap and cheaper, but they usually failed after a short period of time unlike the REAL Japanese caps... affected alot of products.

I just used NiMH rechargeables in mine. It's 2 or 3d before I had to swap, and I had a batt meter app that recorded history and could graph things like batt voltage with a bunch of options.

really were they holding it with toes? and feet? Unless your a monkey that would be hard to hold. LMAO the information in that review is so outdated and obviously paid to show the kindle as more favourable. lmao

Take what you will from it but its a farce.

hey all for those that wish too comment on the above so called review of the KOBO touch here is the original reviewers email

ehamburger@businessinsider.com

It would be nice to see some real revies not ones that seem to be paid to make the competition look bad.

Its also fairly obvious this Touch was not set up just used straight out of the box, or he would have noted the all the updates to the unit.

Actually I can understand how someone who has grown accustomed to holding the Kindle in a certain way and using the side buttons to change pages could find the Kobo Touch different and awkward to use at first. Some people (like that reviewer) could take it as a reason to prefer the older unit and dismiss the new one as unsuitable, rather than adapting. Obviously to those of us who aren't attached to an older unit, it's not a factor at all - we quickly find our own preferred way to hold the Kobo Touch, and we don't see what the fuss is about. While it may be understandable, the fault with the review is that the reviewer should have presented a more balanced view instead of a personal bias.

I haven't bought yet, but the SD-Ram slot impressed me. Expandable memory - what a concept! Here we are in the 21st century, and people still make devices with fixed memory. DUMB! With the Kobo, I can store several SD-Rams full. (Yeah, I'm a hoarder. I just don't trust the 'cloud' to retain my books - I want them where I can get to them as long as I have a power source for my device.)

I think he is paid to present that review. HE obviously did not do more then unbox the kobo otherwise (based on the date) he would have noticed that the update allowed so much more.

It definatly was not balanced.

The screen connector on my kobo wifi became detached and so half the screen was permanently jumbled. I returned it to Chapters and I got a Touch in exchange. Now I'm glad my Kobo wifi broke!

While the article was published on July 8th, we shouldn't assume that it was written or submitted then. It may have been written up to a month earlier prior to the author going on a 4 week bender.

However, I suspect he simply ignored the instructions on initial setup as you've already suggested.

Its so frustrating to see so much miss information from people who call them selves the experts. When has laziness become the standard for a good days work?

Here's another hilarious comparison review of the Kobo Touch and the Nook ST, where the reviewer concludes that the Nook ST is best because its Home button is cool "N" shape whereas the KT has "a boring metal dash":
