Got an eDGe... now what?

Okay, so I got my hands on an eDGe.... the original, not the pocket one. So, now what do I do with it?

I've tried to hook it up to my computer, but I don't seem to have the appropriate drivers for it. I'd like to "root" it, specifically so I can get marketplace on the machine and load other android apps. I've done some reading and searching, but I haven't found a good step by step guide.

Anyone got a good idea of where to look to get started?

Drivers should install automatically.

There's some directions and neat stuff in the Tweaks sticky-I haven't had any experience with them personally, but several people have done it.

I'd suggest the Amazon Android Marketplace-they give away paid apps for free every day

There is also instructions on how to connect to a computer without the cable if something is wrong with connecting.

Thanks... I did look through that thread a bit, but I'm not to that point yet. I'm still just trying to get the computer and the edge to see each other.

I'm pretty new to android, so I'm still learning a lot with it. I've worked plenty with Windows Mobile, but this is a whole new ball game for me, so I'm still taking baby steps right now.

Hi Red!

This may sound silly, but why are you trying to hook your eDGe up to your computer? Are you transferring books? Files? I have not ever hooked my big eDGe up to my computer -- no need! I connect wirelessly over our LAN when I need to, otherwise the eDGe is a computer.

Android is different from Windows Mobile, as you say. One of the biggest differences I have found is in the way they handle running applications. I use a task manager/app killer all the time on Windows Mobile (or my battery will die), but discovered that app killers can actually be harmful in Android because of the way it prioritizes shutting apps down. Not sure I'm explaining that right . . .

My thoughts exactly.

My edge was my only computer for 2 months when I was between laptops. (Old Macbook broke but new Macbook airs were soon-to-be-announced.) My suggestion is to think of the EE as its own computer and play with it that way first to discover all it can do.

Well, I did say that I was new to Android.

Can you help me understand adb? I read some where that I need to do some adb commands in order to white list programs to load.

If you are new to Android then stay away from such things as rooting and adb because if you do something wrong - as did one member of this forum - you could end up with a brick, a device that does not work and will not work no matter what you try to do.

Not all programs work on the edge therefore trying to make them work usually ends in failure and problems.

At the stage you are at with Android it is far better just to use what does work and ignore what doesn't. If there is some app that you think you must have but it doesn't load, ask about it here because there may be an older version that does.

Most of the apps that don't work are looking for things that are available on Android phones but not on the edge - usually things like gps, tilt sensors and so on. As long as apps look for what is not there and insist on them being there to work there is no way you will get them working on the edge. Not all apps require everything they are looking for to work, it is just bad programming if, for example, a map app insists on geo location to work and won't work without it when all you need to do is enter your location to get a map that you can use.

I'm not to worried about bricking. I've played with installing roms on other pdas/phones. I've been in IT for years and years. Built and upgraded many comps and servers. Im just new to Android so have to learn and Ill go slow and careful until I get more experience.

Something like me then - started with punch cards in the 60s.
