It is. But the K3 firmware has a slightly better pdf support.
I am more happy with Doukan though and thinking of reverting the original firmware as K3 firmware on DXG gives you some issues with wakening up from stand-by, active content not working.

for pdfs: two-column view, reflow, better zoom support (imho).
Overall: many shortcuts which make reading experience significantly better

but there're downsides as well: cannot annotate in landscape mode, only English is supported (epubs, mobis). For other languages, it is not so usable.

Thanks, eLiNK! It figures that someone would have figured this out right after I sold my DXG. However, I can now point people to this thread when I see this question come up over at the Amazon Kindle board.

I actually uninstalled Duokan. I had it on my Kindle 3 for ePub support. It does a horrible job of displaying images inside an ePub. I also got spacing errors in the ePub also.

Navigation by folder was nice, but if a folder contained other folders and files, it would show the folders and not the files.

I have a kindle DX with firmware 3.2.1 with launchpad installed. This way i can go to duokan and return back to original firmware without a restart. Going to duokan takes about 10 seconds and returning back about 45 seconds.

I generally use the original firmware for my daily readings (amazon bought stuff or some mobis i sideloaded.)

For PDFs i generally prefer duokan for the reasons explained by me and eLINK.

I rarely read epubs with duokan because i find converting them to mobi by calibre and reading them with original firmware much easier. Duokan's fonts have still a long way to go to race with Amazon firmware.

Also installing 3.x firmware to a kindle DX has a great advantage that hasn't been mentioned here. firmware 2.5.8 doesn't support some non-Latin characters (In my case it is Turkish characters) so i can't view my sideloaded mobi files in Turkish properly. Firmware 3.2.1 solved this problem as well.

So i would strongly suggest installing firmware 3.x to your kindle DX and then install Duokan. There is instructions on development forum for both.

For what you appear to be looking for, i.e programming books, I'd suspect that you've just ruled out the device that's best suited - I just hope that the reason's down to personal experience, not hearsay, as from my personal experience, I have no problem with reading from the iPad even after a day in front of a screen.

It is rather a combination of factors. To start with self control, i am certainly going to waste more time on the ipad rather than reading. It serves as a distraction. It may sound strange, but what is ; is.
Ipad does have a beautiful screen/display , but i do not wish to go for a screen which refreshes , my eyes are on their way out.. i do not have a problem reading something on my laptop after a day's work either... but i am noticing my vision is taking a hit.

DBA and engineer here ... I mostly read technical and programming books, plus PDFs. Best readers for your particular case are: DXG and iPad , look no further. Everything else won't fit the bill, trust me. Why? mainly because the screen size and Amazon bookstore, plus landscape capabilities. If you can't afford both and editing PDFs is not a must, stick to DXG.

Kindle 3 is too small for technical books and PDFs, even on landscape mode. And other ebook readers like Sony won't give you direct access to Amazon bookstore. If you're into technical books, Amazon and O'Reilly are the best online bookstores.

By the way, PDF is not an ebook format so you won't find a fast and good reader that can handle those and is eink too; tablets are better and faster with PDF documents, like iPad with GoodReader.
