The serial number is on the back of the Sony but more important than that I would think, is when you register the unit to ADE or the Sony Reader Library. It shows it was yours and when you did so.

Call me crazy but I really like the idea of having a watermark on MY purchased ebooks. Beats the heck out of DRM and I like the idea of having a "customized" ebook just for me. Maybe I'm being naive.

The benefit of a watermark over DRM is that the publisher/author is saying we trust you to not give this to others and we want you to enjoy it on any device you have, from your PC to your Kindle, Sony, DSi, Gameboy, whatever. We all of course know removing a watermark will be just as easy as removing DRM. While I have removed DRM on my purchases to use it on an alternate device, I have never removed a watermark on the ebooks I have bought that use them. Both Pragmatic programmers and Manning Books put watermarks in their PDFs. Why is it every thread on MR seems to move towards copyright and DRM? Hmmm... BOb

This thread has made me want to re-read the Harry Potter series. I don't often re-read stuff. Perhaps October would be a good time to start... if the price is right. BOb |

And of course, we have the intended purpose of the internet (actually, this one seems to be pretty accurate):

One thing that hasn't been mentioned really, is that other companies are already doing this. O'Reilly does DRM free but watermarked ebooks. No one has had issues with them doing that.

Incredible how many of the negative responses to eBooks come from people who have never tried eBooks. How about... "After having badmouthed eBooks for years, author J.K. Rowling finally tried eBooks and discovered that they are great." I confess that I had to try them to love them myself.
