I'd be so happy if Amazon decided to support epub, but it would just seem very out of character for them to give up the ghost on the epub issue when they've fought it for so long. And if they were going to support epub, seems like the library thing would have been the time to announce it. Then Amazon wouldn't have to do this partnership with Overdrive silliness.

Anyone know where we can send Ms. Rowling fanmail? While it is disappointing not to have had Harry Potter ebooks for a long time, I'd like to applaud her decision to release DRM-free ebook versions now that it's finally being released in electronic form. I sincerely hope this will set a precedent for other titles.

To cope with the possibility of so-called 'piracy' the ebooks will feature a digital watermark that will identify who purchased the book. This will allow authorities to track down who shared an ebook with the rest of the world, and those users could be faced with lawsuits for copyright infringement. Wild Prediction Time. I predict that the first person to be prosecuted under this will turn out to have been someone whose computer/account was hacked. Looking forward to seeing a nice granny with no firewalls and a password of 12345 thrown to the lions. *sigh* When will they learn that watermarks can be removed, books can be bought/stolen under fake accounts, and that pirates are not automatically stupid? |

Presumably a "digital watermark" would be invisible to the user. Some piece of code embedded into the epub. And, I don't doubt, the ability to remove it will exist within days of the books being available. So it's an expensive re-invention of a wheel that never works and never will. *wall banger* Last edited by anamardoll; 06-23-2011 at 11:32 AM. |

I suspect the development team doesn't realize there ARE other formats. Last edited by anamardoll; 06-23-2011 at 11:33 AM.

THIS BOOK BELONGS TO Ana Mardoll SO HANDS OFF! Only replace "Ana Mardoll" with your name. Or, more likely, your credit card number. Last edited by anamardoll; 06-23-2011 at 11:39 AM.

We're pretty sure our fans intend to rob us. News flash, guys, the people who wanted HP illegally? HAVE ALREADY GOT IT. ALSO: Cue "legality of removing watermarks" discussion in 3...2...1...

True. If it's encrypted and then embedded in an image, though, it might be tricky to remove unless you just remove the image altogether. Oh well, who cares. So long as I don't see it, I don't care. It's not like I'll be sharing my purchased ebooks all over the intarwebs.

You'd just save a 348 px by 653 px blank image as HPWM.jpg or whatever and zip it all back up. For me, it's the principle of the thing. If I lose my Sony and someone extracts my books and distributes them online, I don't want the FBI knocking at my door because Rowling couldn't be bothered to use regular DRM or -- gasp -- none at all. Watermarks don't trace pirates. They trace victims whose accounts were hacked or devices were stolen. Last edited by anamardoll; 06-23-2011 at 11:43 AM.
