An Awful Review of the ANN and the Kobo Touch - Page 2

I don't know if Pogue reads Mobileread or not, but he fixed the error about the Touchscreen and acknowledges that Sony did it first.

I thought the review was very favorable to both devices and the negative stuff was mainly his attempt at humor. I think we've been taken in by RockdaMan's post, which is extremely misleading.

While I agree with you insofar as Pogue never calls either reader "awful", I thought Pogue's review of them was tainted with a sort of, "Oh, look, how quaint!...E-readers." attitude. He's an Apple fanboy from way back, so it doesn't surprise me that he continues to compare e-readers to the iPad, despite all evidence that consumers don't actually find them mutually exclusive.

To be fair, B&N just seems to be throwing names at the wall and seeing what sticks. The initial unveiling gave a lot of us the impression they were calling it The Nook Simple Touch Reader, but their website now relegates that phrase to a tagline: ALL-NEW nook, the simple touch reader. Meanwhile, they're selling cases for the Nook 2nd Edition.

I'm thinking it's just called nook.

Pogue has steadily lost credibility with me over the last few years. Not only as a result of his unapologetic Apple fanboi-ism, but also his schtick, which I once found engaging, but to me has become cheesy and annoying.

A shame since I did enjoy his work.

Wrote Mr. Pogue about the discrepancy between what he called the reader and what the picture showed. Received the following in reply.

"Here's the email I got from the Barnes & Noble PR woman:

Thanks for your time today. Wanted to provide a few things that may be helpful as you review the All-New NOOK.

· Please call it the All-New Nook. (Please note it’s not Nook Touch, etc.). We refer to the original NOOK products as 1st Edition, fyi."

So I guess the problem is not with Mr. Pogue but with B&n's PR requesting that a product stamped as one thing (nook) be referred to as something else.

As you noted, the review was awful, not the products. And the review was awful because he A. got the name wrong, and B. compared it with another device from outside its class.
