Baen's Websciption, first and foremost. I used to be all Fictionwise until they imploded and now I stay away like they have the plague. I now use Book-on-Board for everything non-Baen but they just "updated" their website so now it is SLOWER than slow. I didn't know Sony have "regular" epub for non-Sony readers. I'll be checking them out. |

I also buy lots from Baen, some from Smashwords, and an occasional (used to be more) book from Fictionwise. I've recently bought books from Ridan Publishing (got hooked on Nathan Lowell's Trader Tales books), and they are quite cheap for ebooks, and PhoenixPick (http://www.phoenixpick.com/), who have some excellent deals and freebies. |

I used to buy a lot at Fictionwise, but don't anymore. I mainly use Kobo and Smashwords now to purchase, but I get a lot of my books from the library since the Big 6 started price fixing.

For me, it's Kobo and Smashwords. I've never actually bought anything at B&N (free books don't count ) and previous to their recent 60% off coupon, I'd only bought one multiformat book at Fictionwise. |

What is the benefit of buying books from a non-Amazon/BN store, exactly? Everything I've ever looked at is cheaper at Amazon/BN. :/

One of the benefits is not supporting the two stores that have DRM that is not compatible with any others. I buy at B&N when my mother-in-law gives me a gift card and I get freebies from Amazon.

Well, Amazon and B&N DRM their books so they are not usable without stripping the DRM, which is illegal. So, unless you have a nook or kindle you can't legally read books on any other eReader.

I normally get my ebooks from ebooks.com and Smashwords. The selection for ebooks.com is quite good, even for those who are under geographical restraints, and Smashwords because... Some of the stories are actually quite good there. I can't use Kobo or any of the big two, because of geographical constraints. |
