chinese on kindle 2: which solution?

i'm getting my dad a refurb "Kindle Wireless Reading Device with Free 3G – 2nd Generation", mostly so he has some way to email people. he has no internet/computer/smartphone. but i thought it would be nice if he could read some old chinese books from gutenberg or some online chinese newspapers too.

for those who have worked on their kindle 2, what worked out best for you?

blogkindle firmware unicode hack? duokan? other?

if you have a link and instructions, that would be great.

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

I replaced the fonts with Arial Unicode from my Windows PC, this was the only font I found that included German Umlauts and Chinese characters, but if you don't need German, other unicode fonts might be fine.

thanks for the info. after doing the stuff at that link, does your browser still work? do i need to take precautions like never updating the firmware? did you just replace the reading font or the browser fonts as well?

i see no serial number on the back of my kindle but it starts with b003 under settings menu, so i guess i have the global wireless?

what happens if i choose the wrong firmware? will it brick?

PDF is an option also, if you have the source document and a tool to generate it. Set the page size of the document to match the size of the Kindle viewing area, set the document margins to zero (or close to it - Kindle adds margins around the PDF viewing area), don't include headers/footers (they take valuable real estate and Kindle will show page numbers) and set the text size and typeface according to your preference.
