What happens if you don't have wifi access? Does the firmware include all the ads?

Loonies say "aint". Us groundhogs, politely, say "is". I've seen it both ways. It's been cleaned up for mainstream economic and political use. So I guess the version you use depends on the context; as a Heinlein quote with A, as a re-statement of the laws of thermo, with I. Either way it is good shorthand to remind folks that it is literally a law of nature that everything has a price. I'm also fond of "Cold Equations" as shorthand for "the universe doesn't care". Lots of succint wisdom to be found in the SF classics. |

What'd be interesting is a subsidized 3G kindle for price of the wifi kindle. I don't want 3G so much as a white kindle. I thought the graphite would be cool, but now I prefer the white one. With 3G, they can push ads in off peak hours. That may work economically. One consideration haven't seen mentioned is the resale value. Used kindles sell pretty well, but now an ad-free kindle will have additional cachet. |

So how do you "take action" on an ad? My first thought would be to touch the ad (but that's because I have a reader with a touchscreen!!). But anyway, the ad is on the screensaver, so your Kindle is asleep. When you wake the Kindle up, does it go to your home screen with the same ad, or does it go to your last page read, which doesn't have the ad? Also: would you be embarassed to give a "deal-Kindle" as a gift? eP |

Otherwise it looks like "whee, I saved $25 in cash money while you get to see ads for life!" Sure, it's the thought that counts, but what would that particular thought say about the gift-giver? Better to give a gift card amount to put towards the cost of a Kindle (ad-supported or not, depending on your budget) and let the recipient decide which version they want, if insistent on giving out Kindles as gifts. | |

A menu pick takes you to a listing of all the active offers. Gifting a KSO should be no problem as long as you know the recipient likes deal-hunting. Make no mistake, there are people who regularly troll outlet stores and would by thrilled to get a KSO. |
