The language is interesting; I've learned a new word or two. There are, however, some very familiar words/terms, as well. Edit: Oh look, now they've willingly entered the realm of pedophilia...geesh! Last edited by Nyssa; 04-09-2011 at 11:12 PM.

Yeah, hubby reminded me that they were practically at marrying age for the time. I couldn't help thinking that sisters are going to have to marry pretty dim-witted or "morally ambiguous" mates, now that they've been "deflowered". |

'sides people who wrote (and read) stuff like Romance of Lust, Fanny Hill etc. couldn't have been as repressed as we think. I think the Victorians just had good PR people.

I have no idea what the chicken thing means, but I agree with you on the whole "not so repressed" comment.

Oh! & Eww! One of the main character's conquests, just added extra pressure with her hand, when her new husband entered her. She did state, however, that he was as naive as he assumed she would be, so she got away with it. |

I think that stuff (about proof of female virginity) is mostly b.s. anyway because there is such a variation in women's anatomy. But it doesn't appear to have been b.s. to some historical people. I do wonder how many poor girls were unfairly maligned because they didn't bleed or have an average hymen.

They say it's important for royalty. Do you think Kate Middleton had to be "checked"? |

The Victorian era was an age of Hypocrisy in some ways. Fine upstanding members of the community I'm fairly sure didn't always practice what they preached. And of course there was a good deal of misinformation on some topics as well. Back then there were a lot of women who plied the worlds oldest profession just in order to have the means to feed their families since there were no real social aids back then to help out. Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist and other books based on his own childhood memories. Google Hellfire Club if you want an eye opener of how things really were among the upper crust way back when. There was no age of consent way back in the 19th century either. It was only at the last part of that century or the early 20th that such laws were passed.

If it hasn't already, think it's time something very symbolic was substituted, like, say, a white dress, which is as far as anyone's business has going anyway. All this virginity-at-marriage stuff was, was a guarantee that the bride wasn't already pregnant by someone else, a guarantee that lasts up until the minute after the exam/wedding night is over It's freaking 2011. If the royal line of succession is so important to these fossils, there are paternity tests. Nothing else could possibly concern anyone other than the bride and groom.

Unfortunately, the hypocrisy and double standard applies still today. Look at how Princess Di was shunned by the royal family after her affair (s) came out and we all know what Charles was doing, probably from day one. Don't know that I envy Kate living in that particular fish bowl.
