Bottom line - piracy is gonna happen. I really believe that the majority of people are like me, and would rather go the legitimate route but two things send them to the darknet - 1) is there a legit source available and 2) is the price something they can support. The only thing authors/publishers can control is whether they are gonna be ahead of the eight ball so that the majority of honest people looking first for legit sources at reasonable prices can find them. | |||

Prejudice is prejudice; it is neither rational nor easily overcome. Ms. Rowling has an obvious prejudice for technology as exemplified by her first drafts being in longhand and her resistance against all argument to electronic publication. Don’t hold your breath for your legal e-copy of any of her work. If, like me, you can morally rationalize (right or wrong, I define my own morals)the money I’ve spent on multiple DTV copies of the series; Google is your friend. |

Well, if you have digital copies of Harry Potter on your kindle or laptop or tablet, watch out for US Border seizures: http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/...zedonentrytous Gist: they don't need anything more than the fact you are crossing the border into the US. |

Hmm. That's the second questionable decision we've heard from the 9th circuit recently. Glad I don't live in that jurisdiction. Of course, the article says the reason the Border Patrol decided to search the computer is that the guy was a registered sex offender, and it turns out they found child pornography. so maybe they knew something we don't. It would be a long line at the border if they just arbitrarily examined every device's contents. |

Or maybe they are not randomly grabbing peoples electronics and searching them. Even if they are, I doubt that they are going to be overly worked up by seeing any of the HP novels and they would have to prove that you downloaded them illegally and didn't scan them in.

How long are they going to keep on with this? Im pretty sure I read another article on this site before about Harry Potter becoming an ebook. Frankly Im sick of this, release it or dont release it, stop teasing everyone.

Yes, it flares up every now and then. But you have to understand the fans that are coalescing to put pressure (or trying to) on the author every chance they get. Word does get around....

I think at this point pretty much everyone that has heard of it and wanted to read it has bought the paper books, which they could scan and put on their ereader. I downloaded them to save myself alot of time. There was a statement from a US Judge that said if a book was owned and not available as an ebook, there was very little chance of any successful lawsuit happening if someone were to download it. I lost the link but definately remember reading it. I don't worry about having them on my ereader at all since the paper books are sitting in my room, even if she released ebooks I wouldn't buy them again just to format shift... |

Yes, google is my friend, however, it doesn't tell me if there are any viruses or other stuff piggybacking on the file, and I'm a coward when it comes to downloading illegal files. I own the series in hardcover in English and in paperback in French, and I'd buy it in a minute in electronic form. |

Of course her original work being in longhand wouldn't have anything to do with being unemployed and on state benefits... lots of computing gear for people in that position... and maybe she got a touch prejudiced against ebooks when one of the HP books was ripped off from the printer, scanned and posted to darknet before the actual release of the book... still, it's just unjustified prejudice... Don't keep it on your computer, put it in someplace like Dropbox in the cloud.
