To Taming,
Thanks for your reply. I have 2 Kobos: one with Wifi, one without. Does that mean that the older Kobo will never get the 1.9 version? This is really disturbing. |

I have no idea if Kobo-1 will get any more updates or not. At some point, old models don't get updates any more. It's the way things go--phones that are "stuck" at Android 2.1, old Kindle and Sony readers--it's the way of the world.
I've said it before, but, I always hope for improvements, but at the end of the day, the only thing I am entitled to is what the company told me the machine can do on the day I bought it new--everything else is gravy. When I buy something, and I don't like how it does something or how it performs, I take it back. Six months later--well, I got what I paid for on day 1 and I'll either live with it, or buy something newer. Last edited by taming; 04-03-2011 at 02:50 PM. |

That's what I thought. It hasn't given me the option to get 1.9 yet, though, not matter how often I connect to the network. Does that mean the upgrade just hasn't reached me yet, and I should keep checking, or might there be something else wrong?

I'm surprised how slowly the 1.9 is still rolling out, but I doubt it's anything wrong on your end AMO. One thing to realize is that the best way to "force" the update is to sync repeatedly, so if you have the option it probably easier/faster to do that on the desktop with the Kobo attached.

But it's good to know that the rollout is still slow for others too. I ended up calling Customer Support, and they told me to do a reset to factory settings, and then it should offer me the upgrade. Haven't tried it yet, as I dread the thought of having to reload all my books... but I guess I will eventually. As soon as I finish my current library book. ![]() |

To Amo,
I received the same advice from Kobo. I have tried it, and yet it did not load the new version. I have sent a reply e-mail to the Kobo representative who had suggested that I reset the device. I am waiting for a reply. When I get it , I will let you know. To Taming, My non-wifi Kobo is newer than the wifi one. I bought it because I don't use the wifi function. Its firmware version is newer than on the wifi Kobo. This is why I tought that Kobo would continue to issue firmware updates for both models. Linda |

Oy! Thanks for letting me know! I almost went and did the reset just now; I'm glad I checked here again before I did. It would have been a pain to have to reload all my books for nothing. I guess I'll just keep checking the Wifi for the update, maybe they just haven't gotten around to us yet.

Another useless advice from the Kobo representative. This time the procedure was to:
1) plug kobo into computer 2) select manage library 3) open desktop application 4) press control + shift + U Did that, did not work. The instructions were very clear but useless. Still waiting... |

Called them again this morning to ask, and the response I got was that they just hadn't got around to releasing the upgrade for everyone yet. So I guess we have to hang on for another little while.

For what it's worth: I did not update the desktop application.
I just connected my Kobo to the wifi network one day and it said "There is a firmware update!". I like it. Navigating menus feel snappier. Turning pages is about the same, but there's a serious lag between a page change and your next command. That is: you turn the page, then press back. It waits about a second on the new page before going back. I assume this is caused by writing the current page to the database every time. This is further backed up by the fact that I have never lost my place, even when the battery ran out in the middle of reading. Last edited by ArmorDog; 04-05-2011 at 07:28 PM. Hi all! I'm new here, so this is my first post. I've had the Kobo wireless model for just under a week now. I took about 12 tries of syncing before I was prompted for the 1.9 firmware update.
A big change that I've seen since switching to the newer firmware, is that the wireless shuts off automatically unless you're in the store or syncing menus. If I turn on Wifi, then go back to reading a book, I can check the menu and Wifi is Off. I can turn it on to go to the store, and it will work fine - then if I leave Wifi on and resume reading, I can once again check the menu and the Wifi is off. I am assuming this is intentional, as a way of minimizing battery usage. (And I guess prolonging the life of the device.) I think it's great, since there's no other reason to have the Wifi on (no browser, etc.) I didn't notice this feature being listed as a change point for 1.9, so maybe I just didn't notice it before, but I think with the previous firmware the Wifi would stay until until I turned it off myself. Sorry for the long post! |

I want that update. I just tried updating my library about 6 times but it didn't do anything.
Mainly I want it for the "go to page" function. I have a side-loaded book that is 800 pages and there are no chapters. On my iPod I got about 75% of the way through the book, so I really don't want to have to hit the "next page" button on my Kobo a few hundred times. |

For those of you worried about not received the update, if it's any comfort I also have a wifi that hasn't been updated (still running version 1.7.4 r21156 nov 17 2010) launching the desktop program (borders) and sitting there for awhile shows no update, control-shift U, nadda. so you're not alone. Maybe at some point I'll turn on the wifi settings on the device, but I like that it's not running out of juice very quickly, so am more than a little hesitant to do so.

Correct. The original kobo was upgraded just a couple months ago. The hardware is entirely different so there is no "one firmware fits all" approach.
