I like these events. It's a great way to introduce the public to eBooks.

Get acquainted with e-readers at Everett library event

Best Buy staffers will be supply library-compatible e-readers, such as Barnes & Noble's Nook and NookColor, plus e-readers by Sony, Pandigital and Velocity Micro, for people to try out. The library will also provide an iPhone and an iPad from Apple. Both can both be used as e-readers.

E-reader experts and librarians will be on hand to demonstrate how to use the devices with the library's e-book collection.

Kindle, a proprietary e-reader from of Amazon.com, is not compatible with public library's e-books system, so it will not be at the event.

Kindle doesn't work with the system, no reason for it to be there. I love mine, but lack of library lending is still a big strike against it.

Kindle's closed system is a major reason I went for the Nook myself, though if someone happened to give me a Kindle I certainly wouldn't return it as it's a nice machine. Library lending was way down the list of considerations when I was looking at what to buy. Since then I've found that it is nice to have the library feature, as I've probably read one or two library books a month that otherwise I might have passed by - and some of which I might now be inclined to buy.

The Kindle isn't a closed system. I can (and do) purchase from many retailers aside from Amazon.

Aside from that terrible sentence ("will be supply"?), if the BB staffers they have there are anything like my local BB staff, I wouldn't want them teaching anyone how to work an ereader!

...yes and no. My library doesn't carry mobi books, and last I knew you had to run scripts to get the PID if the mobi file is encoded. Yeah, the DRM can be striped, but that's not something you can explain to the average user.

In short: natively, right out of the box, the Kindle doesn't read 99% of library books.

If you jump through a lot of hoops and are willing to do something maybe illegal and probably unethical, sure.

If library support is important to you, then get something else. If Kindle's features suit you, then get one. What's the need for the screaming fonts?

it still boggles my mind that Amazon of all company's has chosen a "closed" ecosytem. ( yes yes I know there are ways around it) Everything about Amazon is anti establisment and it's MP3 store even before yesterday's cloud service was always a great alternative to buying your songs other than iTunes, Love how it uses Varibale Bit Rate. It's movies are across multi platforms and since I've gotten the Roku I haven't even glimpsed at Comcast OnDemand because of Amamzon Vidoe onDemand. much cheaprer HD movies.

I have no idea why of all company's Amazon would choose the "Apple" route if you will.

When Apple released the Kindle, ePub was barely on the horizon. It exploded in popularity AFTER the Kindle came out. There's still no real business reason for Amazon to switch formats. Library books don't generate revenue for them. They make their money on book sales, not so much on sales of Kindles.
