Meat eating dude here. I like most vegetarian meals, I have to say, but I'll never be a vegetarian. Ever. I'll stir fry a rat before turning vegetarian. |

I remember reading that Vegans don't get enough of some vitamins and need to take special supplements, is that true?

Even if could stand living without meat (and not loose weight), I'd never become a vegan. You have to be obsessive, and most vegans I have met are fanatical about it, so much so that they think their choices should dictate the choices of the rest of us. /Rant.

Just like any other group, it's the loud fanatical ones who're heard most, to the detriment of anyone within shouting distance. But yes, to have a healthy vegan diet you do have to pay very close attention to what you eat. The main concerns are a few of the essential amino acids and some vitamins (B12 comes to mind) and minerals. I certainly couldn't manage to maintain a vegan diet.m A healthy vegetarian diet is no more difficult than a healthy omnivorous diet.

I have known a few vegans and I have to agree, they reminded me of reformed smokers, they were the ones telling me that eating meat was wrong. None of them could have lifted a 20 pound bag of soya beans without help though. When my daughter was very young, maybe 5, she went with me to a friends place, my friend was an avid hunter but his wife was a vegan (?) anyway, his wife asked my daughter if she ate meat and told her that it was bad and that she shouldn't eat meat. My daughter told her, "If God didn't want us to eat meat, they wouldn't taste so good!" with that she stormed out of the room to wait for me by the door. My friends wife was speechless and my friend had to work hard to suppress his laughter. My friend still teases my daughter about it, she works for his company and he calls her "Carnivore Syd". Supplementing vitamins and minerals is more likely to be necessary, though. B12 is much less abundant in non-animal foods, so often needs to be supplemented. (There's some evidence that a large percentage of meat-eaters are low in B12 as well.) Vitamin D is another one that is uncommon in vegan diets and some people don't actually get enough sun to make up for it. Iron is also commonly supplemented in vegan diets because the form found in plant foods is harder to absorb.
