That's one of the nice things about Apple, they're big into consistency. They don't change their cabling too often compared to how many times the USB connectors have changed over the last 10 years.

Here's my take. I really like how Android is very customizable and lets the user have control, and I've actually considered getting one for my next smartphone to replace my iPhone... BUT... Right now, the Android can not match the accessories for my iFamily. I have an alarm clock by my bed that has an iPod dock on it. I can plug in any of my iPods or my Iphone, charge, play, and control it. In my car, I have a cord that does the same thing, and would also charge and play my iPad as well. On top of that, for whatever iProduct I own, there are tons of cases and accessories for it for me to choose from. So far, I haven't found anything like that on the Android OS, and unless Apple completely changes their port for the next release of the iPhone (which would be dumb), I'll probably get another iPhone myself. not sure you have looked hard enough, the Droid X has home dock, that turns your phone into a digital alarm clock and charges it as well, and a whole host of other features it also has a car dock that holder, similiar to a GPS dock. It turns your screen into a car dock that allows for GPS, Voice Commands, one touch Player for music, one touch for blue tooth, and Voice dialing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl4ap...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YqPv...eature=related Last edited by boswd; 03-03-2011 at 01:30 AM.

Also, I wish there was some sort of Android standard for microusb like the iFamily has. For instance, if I was to get the Droid X, that's great with all those accesories, but if I want to get an HTC, I'm screwed.

It's a pretty irrelevant argument. The Apple dock cable has been around for so many years, that even if it is manufacturer-specific, it's ubiquitous; anyone who owns iPods probably has a number of them lying around the house. I have more Apple dock cables than I know what to do with, just as I also have with mini- and micro-USB cable. Both are sold by any high-street electrical outlet.

if you're a tweaker then android is the better os right now. but if you're into better quality apps then apple has that locked down.

When it comes to cables - it's roughly even - I can use the same cable on my phone as I do on my Nook (the Sony 505 which is an older generation needs a different one, but it's electrically identical and adapters are cheap). Apple does have an advantage in that docks do tend to work across devices - but even with Apple, devices that aren't the same size and form factor don't fit all the same physical accessories so it's not something that's really worth worrying about. The big advantage I see to the non-Apple devices is the fact you're not locked in to proprietary software. I can plug any one of my Droid, Sony, or Nook into one of my computers and mount it as a mass storage device. Even with an OS that's locked down otherwise, I have my own data storage area that I can access as I wish. It's the software lockdown with Apple that drives me nuts - and while I can see the benefits of their curated approach, I still think they went too far when it comes to locking things down. |

Right, but is there a standard microusb port that I could plug in that will charge AND play the unit at the same time like the iPhone has? If so, that would be great, but I don't think so.

You mean that cables stopped working on existing devices, or that they changed the video out on a new device?
