James P. Hogan's Giants series does just that. In order as follows:
"Inherit the Stars" "The Gentle Giants of Ganymede" "Giants' Star" "Entoverse" The omnibus editions "The Two Moons" contains the first two and "The Two Worlds" contains the third and fourth. Available at Baen.com. |

Many, many books with that subject, but the first to come to mind for me was my most recently read-- Ancient Shores by Jack McDevitt. Then the Heechee books.

I just love the hechee series, great books. I'd add to the list A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fire_Upon_the_Deep.
Dan Simon's Hyperion is another book that comes to mind... |

One of the most chilling short stories about a lost civilization I have ever read is "Ozymandius" by Robert Silverberg which was published in The History of the Science Fiction Magazine: Part 4, 1956-1965. It first appeared in Infinity Magazine, November 1958.
Ozymandius in this story is a robot left over from a dead civilisation. At certain points there are brief quotes of the famous poem by Shelley. However, the poem and the story are given an unexpected and powerful twist. |

Another plug for McDevitt. He does the whole discovery thing very well.
Also Greg Bear's "Eon." The series gets weird but it started great. Or Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle's "The Mote in God's Eye." |

Rendezvous With Rama By Arthur C. Clarke Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys Total Eclipse by John Brunner The Book Of Kells By R. A. MacAvoy And I would also include Burrough's Pellucidar Series. |

Reynolds, Alastair - Pushing Ice Gibson, Gary - Shoal (series) Carver, J A - The Chaos Chronicles (series) "Protector" and "The World of Ptavvs" both from Larry Niven. They fit more or less in this category and can be read before or after the Ringworld series (which is my favorite SF series). |
